Statement:
Though
I have not in the past held leadership positions in NACADA, I have
been profoundly interested in the work of NACADA over the years
and have held leadership positions relative to academic advising.
I have 31 years of experience in academic advising, first at Ball
State University and then for the past 11 years at Southern Illinois
University Edwardsville (SIUE). At Ball State I served as Director
of a living-learning center for a time, and the academic advising
component was a vital part of the program. Later I served as Assistant
to the Dean of the Honors College and Coordinator of Honors Advising.
At SIUE I served for 10 1/2 years as Assistant Director of Academic
Counseling and Advising, which serves over 5,000 undeclared students,
before becoming Acting Director, July 1, 2003 .
As
Chair of the Advising Administration Commission I would focus in
particular on two areas that I regard as integral to the future
direction and development of the profession. First, I believe that
enlightened leadership in academic advising is the key to effective
advising services. The concept is easily stated but, in fact, highly
complex. In general, though, I believe that the most insightful
and productive advising administrators are individuals who have
had broad and deep experience in academic advising. And they are
individuals who possess all of the qualities that make for a really
skilled and effective academic adviser. But of course there are
other significant qualities, as well. The other area that I think
is of extreme importance is advising assessment. We all know that
we have to have assessment, not only because "everybody else
is doing it," but primarily because it probably is the only
way that we can actually improve our performance. Obviously assessment
tells us whether we're accomplishing what we say we want to accomplish,
but, at least as important as that, it also concentrates our attention
on what we do and how we do it.
