Past
Involvement in NACADA:
Years
in NACADA: 7 years
National
Offices Held and Accomplishments Achieved While in Office:
-
1998-2000 Commission Chair for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered
and Allies (LGBTA) Concerns Commission
-
2001-2002 Commission Chair for Faculty Advisors Commission
-
Accomplishments as Chair of LGBTA and Faculty Advisors Commissions-
Perhaps the biggest accomplishment with both Commissions that
I have chaired was my involvement in moving both from Interest
Groups into Commission status. I completed the paperwork and wrote
the Commission mission statements for both the LGBTA and Faculty
Advisors Commissions. My devotion and commitment to these two
Commissions has also helped both Commissions maintain their Commission
status. Both of these Commissions represent important voices within
the NACADA organization. Until they became Commissions, neither
group had a way to be recognized and assist in making NACADA decisions
because they were not represented as a voice or vote on the NACADA
Board.
Regional
Activities/Offices Held, including accomplishments achieved while
in office:
- Was
a member of the regional conference planning team when the regional
conference was held in Des Moines, Iowa in 1998. However, because
of my involvement on the national level and my participation as
a Summer Institute faculty member, I am unable to attend the regional
conferences because of my absences for the other two NACADA activities.
Committee
Activities and Accomplishments:
-
Current member of the Diversity Committee, which is working on
multiple projects that will focus NACADA's attention on cultural
diversity issues.
-
Current member of the Finance Committee, which monitors and approves
the NACADA budget.
Commission/Interest
Group Activities and Accomplishments:
- Current
member of the Faculty Advisors Commission and LGBTA Concerns Commission
Other:
- Served
as Summer Institute Faculty in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
- Served
on the Task Force for Faculty Advisors - This Task Force was charged
with recognizing faculty advisors as important NACADA members.
The Task Force surveyed faculty advisors to determine their needs
and attitudes about the organization. As a result of the Task
Force, the Faculty Advisors Commission was developed and work
on a NACADA one-day faculty advisor workshop was initiated. The
workshop was piloted last spring and will be piloted at additional
regional meeting this year. Hopefully, the workshop will be available
for all regions in the near future.
- Wrote
a NACADA award-winning faculty advisor handbook. Copies of this
handbook have been shared with countless institutions once people
see it at one of the many handbook writing seminars.
- Participate
as a Leader in the NACADA Leadership Program.
Platform
Statement:
As
stated above, I represent two voices-cultural diversity and faculty
advisors--which deserve representation on the Board Directors. My
experience as a Commission Chair has familiarized me with NACADA
policies and procedures. I am committed to NACADA's mission of advising
and I have demonstrated my commitment by serving on several NACADA
boards, committees, and task forces, as well as being a member of
the Summer Institute faculty for the past five years.
NACADA's
service to advisors and institutions of higher learning is important.
I want to continue developing NACADA's exposure and aid in its growth
in the next decade.
NACADA
is my professional organization of choice because it is the only
professional organization that I have worked with whose first and
foremost emphasis is focused on student learning and student success.
