Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

As a current member of the Advisor Training Commission, I attend and participate in commission meetings at the national level and participate on the Conference Proposal Review Committee. I have worked in advising at my institution for 6 years and directly with Advisor Training and Development for the past 3 years. I am currently the Director of Advisor Training and Development at my University; in that role, I:

  • Facilitate and conduct academic and career advisor and counselor training sessions
  • Conduct and review research related to academic advising and career counseling in order to stay abreast of the field and to serve the informational needs of the ALC
  • Develop content material for new and continuing advisor and counselor training sessions
  • Conduct needs assessment regarding advisor training and development
  • Advise and counsel students regarding their career and academic goals, including use of the MBTI and SII instruments
  • Conduct evaluation and assessment of the Advisor Training and Development program
  • Consult with University departments in relation to their advisor/counselor training needs in order to assure effective collaboration and communication
  • Coordination of ongoing evaluation of advising and career counseling services both within student affairs and academic departments
  • Cultivate positive relationships with academic departments and central advising services
  • Participate in meetings to gain knowledge of training requirements for staff and clients
  • selecting and developing teaching aids, such as training handbooks, demonstration modes, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, and reference works.
  • Represent UVU by regularly attending and presenting at conferences related to academic advising and career counseling and training and development
  • Create an advisor certification and assessment program for academic and support advisors and advising administrators at UVU

I would bring to the Commission extensive experience in advisor training and development at the institutional level as well as leadership on advisor training and development within NACADA.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

Over the past few years, advisor training has made great strides at some institutions throughout the country. A number of fine programs have emerged to pave the way towards best practices in the field. Nonetheless, advisor training remains an area in need of improvement for most institutions. For some of these, formal programs may not be viable given size and funding issues. As a result, the most important goal of this unit and the association is to further the development of best practices in advisor training and to expand access to resources that support training. In order to do this, the unit must intentionally explore the tremendous technological resources available to facilitate advisor training and development, both at individual institutions, across institutions, and across the association. In addition, the unit must explore the relationships between training and development and assessment and accountability, which are growing exponentially in importance within higher education.

It is imperative that the unit and the association mine the field of advisor training practice for best practices. However, we must not be insular about this. As members of the commission and advising trainers, it is important that we also explore the related world of training and development within other, similar settings for processes and practices that can inform our own. Finally, this unit must become increasingly involved in supporting and influencing the efforts of the Association as they relate to the development of academic advising and advisors.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

Over the past several years, I have been privileged to work at an institution that has been and continues to ride the cutting edge of advisor training. I have witnessed and participated in and now direct the development of the Advisor Training Program and its training initiatives and have seen the impact such training has on improving the daily practice of advisors, as they strive to better serve their students.

In addition, I have been an executive member of the Professional Association of College Employees at UVU, and have been elected president of this association, where I have acted as voice for employee and advisor issues at the college. I have also presented at national, regional, state, and local conferences on numerous topics related to advising and advisor training. Finally, I have been involved in planning and directing institutional, state and regional conferences responsible for providing quality developmental experiences for advisors.

As a result of my experience in these areas, I have witnessed the tremendous benefits that come to students as a result of being served by well-trained, caring advisors who possess the knowledge, skills, and experience to help them truly explore and pursue their academic, career, and personal goals. Consequently, I have become committed to positively influencing the training of advisors not only at my university, but through involvement with NACADA in whatever capacity I am allowed to serve.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

It is my sincere desire that I be granted the opportunity to collaborate with all of you to further the growth and development of this commission, NACADA, and the development of advisors throughout the country. My experience in advising, advisor training, and leadership combined the the knowledge, skills, and experience all of the members of this commission, should provide me and with the skills and knowledge necessary to further the interests and achieve the goals of this commission.
