Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I am presently the Region Two Regional Representative for the Faculty Advising Commission. I have attended the past seven NACADA national conventions, and have always been active in attending the Faculty Advising Commission meetings. In addition, for the past seven years, I have given one or two presentations at each of the NACADA National conferences. Many of these presentations highlighted the importance of faculty advising and its role in the Millersville University Exploratory Program, which I direct. For the past 24 years at Millersville University, I have conducted faculty advisor training as part of the Exploratory Program.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
During my experiences at the NACADA National Conventions, I have noticed a lack of faculty attendance. I also have detected a negative attitude towards faculty involvement. In addition, I have been led to believe that approximately 80% of student advising is done by faculty.
Since I have been a faculty member for 43 years, and led a program that involved faculty advising for 23 years, I find that this lack of attendance deserves attention. My goal is to recruit more faculty to get involved with the National and Regional NACADA events. By getting more faculty involved, this will improve advising nationwide since training is necessary in order to be a successful advisor. Without involvement in NACADA, these advisors are lacking the proper skills that are essential to be effective advisors.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
After 25 years of training faculty locally, I feel it is time that I have a larger involvement in these endeavors. I feel that my many years of experience could be very useful to others. I would like to give back to the organization that has taught me so much about advising.
I was highly influenced during my presentations at the national level for the past seven years. I also noticed the lack of faculty presentations during this period, and it gave me incentive to try to provide approaches to bring more faculty involvement at the National and Regional level. Ultimately, I want to help NACADA grow.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
In 1986, I started a volunteer program that trained 15 faculty members to advise 147 students without majors. This program eventually became known as the Exploratory Program. Since then, the Exploratory program has continuously grown, and presently includes 100 volunteer advisors working with over 400 students each year. Approximately half of these advisors are faculty. In 2003, the Millersville University Exploratory Program won the NACADA Certificate of Merit Award. Currently, select faculty teach a three-credit, gen-ed approved Freshman Year Inquiry (FYI) course, in which many of them advise all their students. In situations where faculty do not advise everyone in their class, I ensure that the other advisors have their new students in the same FYI seminar. The success of my Exploratory Program demonstrates my commitment to faculty advising.
