Platform Statement:

Highlight the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this position on the NACADA Board of Directors.

I have worked in all three divisions of NACADA-- the Regional, Commission & Interest Group, and the Administrative Division -- and learned a great deal from every experience. I've been fortunate to work with terrific NACADA colleagues and the absolutely outstanding staff at the Executive Office.  

As Commission and Interest Group representative, I worked with fellow representative Victor Macaruso (UW-Madison) and Executive Office liaison, Julia Wolf, to implement the NACADA Strategic Plan, and with Chairs to maximize communication with their members and bring concerns to the Council and the Board.  We focused on growing the CIG Division Steering Committee to include more voices in the leadership structure. We helped new interest groups and commissions get established, and guided commissions when Chairs had to take leaves of absence or cope with financial crises at their institution. This next year I will work with David Spight (UT-Austin) and Jenifer Scheibler (EO), the CIGD Steering Committee, and an ad-hoc team of current Commission Chairs to review the Commission and Interest Group Division structure.  
 
I learned a great deal about NACADA by participating in the regional and administrative structure as well. My experience as Region 6 Conference Co-Chair helped me understand the unique budget and membership issues that shape that division.  My experience as a Commission Chair allowed me to connect with advisors all over the country on training and development issues and LGBTA concerns.  In addition to co-presenting two webinars for the Administrative division, I have been part of the Emerging Leaders Program since its first year (and am now a Mentor), and been a faculty member at the Summer Institute.  I have written for several NACADA publications including "The New Advisor Guidebook" and am now working as co-editor on the next Advising Administration monograph. I've also presented at many regional and national conferences on training and development topics and LGBTQ issues.

These experiences have exposed me to the different facets of NACADA. I have an understanding of the many issues -- internationalization, budgeting, assessment and evaluation, advisor development, financial sustainability, educational programming, event management, diversity inclusion, technology development, volunteerism -- that affect our success as an organization.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals and initiatives?

I support the Strategic Plan in its entirety and the two issues that speak to me most deeply are continuing the research initiatives of recent years and focusing on understanding the changing demographics in higher education. My contributions to NACADA as a Council representative, Commission Chair, writer, and presenter have focused on these issues.  In focusing on good practices, such as promoting research and prioritizing diversity, I believe we promote the essential and far-reaching elements of the Strategic Plan such as "championing the educational role of academic advising" and "ensuring the effectiveness of the NACADA organization."  

As CIGD representative, I work with Commission and Interest Group Chairs to actualize the Strategic Plan into our daily work as NACADA members. The Division encourages members to: publish and present on advising issues; create annotated bibliographies; offer Webinars; bring NACADA materials and programs to their home campuses; reach out to diverse populations such as faculty advisors, community college advisors, and advisors working with diverse populations; sponsor NACADA members for awards on their home campuses and within NACADA; offer advising sessions at the state and regional level; and use listservs, wikis, Twitter, and blogs to keep advising issues present for members year-round.  I believe that in taking care of the day-to-day activities that serve students, advisors, administrators, and our institutions, we ensure that we meet all components of the Strategic Plan.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? 

Three years ago when I ran for LGBTA Commission Chair I answered this question with the words, "I am excited by the opportunity to explore new initiatives and I am also interested in increasing my involvement in NACADA."  Those sentiments have not changed but my understanding of the insights that come with different experiences has. The Board of Directors offers a different focus than the Council and other Divisions and allows members a chance to expand their view of the advising field to a national and increasingly, international scope.  Participation on the Board also allows members to understand NACADA itself in terms of budgeting and financial sustainability, and to take part in stewardship of the organization.  I look forward, if elected, to enlarging my understanding of the many layers that make up NACADA and contributing as fully as I have in the past.

One of the things I really appreciate about NACADA is how responsive the organization is to member-driven initiatives and it would be important for me to be a voice for those projects on the Board of Directors. Recent initiatives such as the Emerging Leaders Program, the Common Reading at the national conference, and the Research and the Technology Institutes, are examples of outstanding member-driven initiatives begun at the regional level.

It is a compliment to the association that it is able to incorporate new concepts and find ways to support change proactively. I share those values with the organization.  Like many region conference chairs, we decided to incorporate a service element into our 2006 Region 6 conference: our raffle for the American Indian College Fund raised over $1500. We could not have asked for more support from then-Executive Director Bobbie Flaherty and Assistant Director Diane Matteson at the Executive Office (the state of Iowa even required NACADA to register for a gaming license -- Bobbie didn't blink an eye!).  NACADA supports service projects at many Regions and now, at the national level as well, with the recent development of the Graduate Student Scholarship Silent Auction.  These initiatives make NACADA the type of responsive, innovative organization that I love being a part of and to which I enjoy contributing.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information. 

If elected, I also want to bring a technology focus to my work on the Board. Whether it's the enterprise-wide systems we use daily (Banner, PeopleSoft, DARS), Low Impact Technology solutions (Blackboard, YouTube, Skype), or the exciting new developments in Social Media (Twitter, Facebook), advisors must become technologically competent (if not savvy) in order to thrive when working with distance learners, student-veterans, and millennials (to name just a few student populations). These developments mean NACADA must meet the training needs of advising professionals and the organization itself must develop or encourage the development of web sites, blogs, wikis, etc., to capture how Commission, Administrative, and Region Chairs want to work with members.  There are talented members in every Division discussing these issues and that's one reason why I think it's an exciting time to be part of Board!
