Statement:
Highlight
the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving
as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight
your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating
your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this
position on the NACADA Board of Directors. |
As a member of NACADA for over twenty years, I have appreciated the resources and professional growth opportunities that have enriched my professional life. I have tried to give back to the association in many ways. As Chair of the Engineering and Science Commission, I oversaw the modification of the mission statement, encouraged more research projects among our members, and increased the visibility of the Commission by presenting at national, regional and local conferences. I have facilitated a session on hot topics specific to the E&S Commission that has provided a springboard for future national sessions.
I authored an article for Academic Advising Today about the special advising needs of engineering and science students. As Chair of the Commission, I also had the opportunity to learn more about the new structure of the organization and appreciate its complexity.
My current tenure on the CIGD Steering Committee has furthered my interest in enhancing the functionality of the Division and how it can provide more complete services to the membership.
I am currently serving on the Finance Committee, overseeing the Association's budget and financial records. This has given me new insights into how the organization functions and an appreciation for the good work of the Executive Office and others who have kept NACADA fiscally responsible for its members.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you
feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals
and initiatives?
While all strategic goals are critical to the livelihood and advancement of the organization, three goals at the moment seem vital for the organization.
- Enhance NADACA'S global visibility and credibility as the resource for concerns and needs involving academic advising.
Today's upper level campus decision-makers are facing a world that is constantly changing and are instituting policies and actions that help students prepare to enter a global environment. Academic advisors should be proactive in helping to inform those decisions. I will encourage NACADA to continually identify these changing advising needs and provide the professional growth opportunities needed to help advisors develop the knowledge and skills that the future demands. NACADA should continue to actively seek affiliations with advisor groups in other countries and create opportunities for our members to take part in its international initiatives.
- Foster the talents and contributions of all members and promote involvement of diverse populations.
This goal fits with the one above, since advisors work with diverse populations daily, not only with students but administrators, faculty members and staff. Talent abounds in the NACADA organization. We need to continue the excellent opportunities for our members to acquire new knowledge and learn from each other.
- Anticipate the academic advising needs of the twenty-first century students, advisors and institutions.
Higher education continues to take on new challenges, whether it is in technology, on- and off-campus experiences, teaching methods, or future planning. Academic advising needs to be flexible in its reaction to change as advisor duties become more blended and integrated. To fulfill it means that NACADA needs to assign an entity to stay current in the higher education as well as futurist literature and to make recommendations for future workshops, seminars, conference themes, Internet offerings and other professional opportunities so advisors stay well-informed in this area.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
Serving in many capacities in NACADA as a commission chair, committee member and in other roles has been rewarding and challenging. As a Board member I will bring to the table a fresh perspective as an advisor who has had many relevant experiences, both within the association and as an advising leader on my own campus. I consider this an opportunity to not only contribute to the organization to which I owe much, but to be part of the growth of NACADA at an exciting time when it is reaching out to expand its membership to the international advising community. As we move forward we also need to remember our past and appreciate why we are such a strong association today.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
