Platform Statement:

Highlight the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this position on the NACADA Board of Directors.

Coming together for a belief in a common goal: I feel NACADA members are drawn to this organization because we all have the goal of meeting student needs, as diverse as those may be. Because we all care about student success, continuously seek better ways of providing advising services, and feel we can all learn new things from each other, NACADA has grown to be one of the most amazing networks. It is for these reasons that I have been an active participant in NACADA activities, and it has been such an honor to serve this Association and its members in a variety of leadership positions.

NACADA is an organization that listens to its members. These voices are heard most loudly through the Commission and Interest Group membership. As the appointed representative on the Council for the Commission and Interest Group Division, it was my privilege and pleasure to carry the member's voice forward to the Council, where ideas and concerns are discussed and formulated for possible action by the Board. As a member of the Council, I was also able to see how the three branches of the organization -- Administrative, Regional, and Commissions & Interest Groups -- work together to further the interests of all members of NACADA. Now, as Vice President, I work with my fellow Board members to take action on those ideas and concerns that have been carried forward from the general membership.

Having learned much about NACADA and its membership as I have served in several elected positions and on various committees and task forces in a variety of capacities (as outlined below), and having worked with the grassroots of the organization as a member of the Council, I would like to continue representing the voice of our organization by serving as your President.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals and initiatives?

Currently we are all learning how to adapt to a changing student body and cutbacks in available resources during these tough economic times. NACADA embraces the idea that we do not have to enter this journey of change on our own. Having served on the Board of Directors, the Council, and in various other leadership positions, I have heard the voices of the members of this organization and recognize we need to continuously stay abreast of the changing times. We have to work together to adjust, whether it means using technology to the fullest, leveraging resources, or seeking new and creative ways to reach our students.

As NACADA has continued to grow nationally, it has also begun to expand globally. To further promote the role of academic advising within all of our institutions of higher learning, we need to collaborate with our international partners. As a member of the Board of Directors, I chaired the task force that was responsible for the new tag line the Association has adopted, NACADA - The Global Community for Academic Advising. As President, I will continue to support the work of the International Task Force and  welcome the involvement of academic advisors from around the world as we work together to develop and support strong advising programs on our campuses.

NACADA provides many opportunities for professional development as it strives to address the academic advising needs of higher education. As the President, I will work to ensure that professional development opportunities are available in a number of different formats so that they are accessible to all members, particularly during these difficult economic times. As a mentor in the program, and as a member of the Advisory Board, I strongly support the continuation of the Emerging Leaders Program. In addition, I will work to get members involved in leadership roles at all levels. As a faculty member at a two-year college, I understand how important it is for us to reach out to all members of the academic advising community in ways that can benefit them in their various roles and at their various institutional types.

It is important for us to "spread the good word" about the work of our advisors to the Presidents, Chancellors, and Provosts of our institutions. Their support is essential to continuing the valuable contribution academic advisors make to the success of our students in higher education.

In its quest to advance the body of knowledge of academic advising, NACADA needs to collaborate with other professional organizations devoted to the issues of higher education. Through these partnerships, the role of academic advising on our campuses will become more apparent and more appreciated. As the President, I will assist in developing and sustaining these collaborative efforts. I will also encourage continued research and scholarly inquiry in the field of academic advising to support its standing as an accepted profession.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

NACADA has been a tremendous help to me in the advising roles I play on my campus: faculty advisor, coordinator of faculty advising and advisor training, and co-coordinator of peer advising. The professional growth activities, the opportunities to network with colleagues from all around the world, and the opportunity to be involved at many different levels make this a premier organization. In my 12 years as a NACADA member, I have learned a lot, and part of what I have learned is that people with the same passion working together towards a common goal can accomplish some awesome things.

NACADA has grown significantly in the past 12 years, and I feel that, through my involvement, I have contributed in some small way to that growth. I would be honored to serve NACADA as its President so I can continue to represent the all-important voice of our membership.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

The different advising hats I wear on my campus, and the different hats I have worn as I have served NACADA, give me a solid background for understanding the diverse needs of our membership. If elected as President, it is this breadth of experience that will make me an effective advocate for the different constituencies that make up our membership. Thank you for reading my platform and for voting in the election.
