2018 Tentative Schedule

TRACK 1: For individual researchers and research teams

The Research Project Track is for individuals or teams who want to develop (or further plan) the scope of an evidence-based research study. This track is perfect for collaborative teams (faculty advisors and primary role advisors, interdisciplinary teams, or cross-institutional teams) to jump-start a research project. 

TRACK 2: For Advising Administrators and/or Coordinators

The Supporting a Research Agenda Track is for academic administrators who are interested in developing the structures and organizational elements to encourage and support advising-related scholarship on their campus. This track is especially designed for advising program leaders who want to build or strengthen a culture of scholarly advising across their areas of responsibility.

8:00 - 9:15 am  |  Welcome & Plenary - The Scholarship of Advising (Track 1 and 2)

This plenary session will address the current state of knowledge in the Scholarship of Advising, including the "lenses" through which research plays a part in academic advising as a profession. Includes overview of:

  • What is a profession? How do academic leaders advance as professionals?
  • Difference between assessment and research
  • Levels of involvement in research (Scholarly Advising through active researchers)
  • Scope of the Research Agenda in advising (impact, context, theoretical bases)
  • Goal-setting exercise for participants

9:30 - 10:30 am  |  Spotlight Presentation (separate tracks)

Track 1:

  • Continued discussion of goal setting activity (getting specific)
  • Identifying research questions and areas of inquiry
  • Overview of research designs (social science and humanities

Track 2:

  • Continued discussion of goal setting activity (getting specific)
  • Examination of personnel issues related to workload and institutional climate
  • Begin to discuss uncovering capacity for supporting scholar-practitioners

Track 2:

  • Getting specific: Professional development at the unit or institution (process and critical elements)
  • Critical Questions in Academic Advising on Your Campus - Concept mapping related to a research agenda

1:15 - 2:15 pm  |  Plenary Session - Scholarly Advising (Track 1 and 2)

This plenary will address the concept of "Scholarly Advising" from the framework of "Scholarly Teaching" and the "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."

Track 1:

  • Discussion of plenary topic
  • Continued revision of research questions and proposal for scope of study

Track 2:

  • Discussion of plenary topic
  • Continue to address institutional culture and climate for support and what that entails on your campus
  • Work on Action Plan

The closing plenary will address the concept of the "Profession of Advising" from the framework of the literature base, core competencies, grant opportunities, and formal academic training (graduate programs).
