NACADA Research Symposium

Atlantic City, New Jersey 

April 13-14, 2010

 Join us for 24 hours of Research and stay for the

2010 Region 2 Conference!

  • The Purpose of the Symposium is to build a community of scholars. It is open to all NACADA members
  • The Event will take place prior to selected Regional Conferences.

  • The Program is designed for researchers at all levels who are ready to transform their ideas into scholarly works

  • The Agenda will include: large group discussions, small group interactions, independent work, and one-on-one time with research mentors

  • The Participants will receive a binder with pertinent articles related to research in advising, among other useful tools and materials

  • The Cost is $75, which includes Research Symposium resources, time with NACADA consultant, breakfast, and refreshments

Objectives:

  • Participants will be expected to have an idea for a research project in mind prior to the symposium and will further refine their research question during the symposium
  • Participants will be exposed to multiple methodologies and will refine the design of their research projects
  • Participants will identify a community of scholars: leads for where/who to go to for more information, expertise
  • Conveners will discuss IRB and funding issues
  • Conveners will discuss the ethics of research in academic advising with specific reference to participants’ projects
  • Participants will develop a timeline and an action plan for their research project

  • Role of research in academic advising
  • Summarize research topics from pre-attendance survey, brief group discussion
1:30-2:00 p.m. Introduction to Inquiry Methods
  • Quantitative, Qualitative, Mixed, Critical Inquiry
  • Connection between methods and research questions
2:00-2:45 p.m. Breakout sessions
  • Refining a research question and linking to a methodology
  • Explore methods in more depth

Meet Our Faculty:

Dr. Janet Schulenberg is a Senior Undergraduate Studies Adviser and Coordinator of Programming for the First-Year Testing, Consulting, and Advising Program at the Division of Undergraduate Studies, Penn State.

Janet earned her B.S. in Biology and Anthropology from SUNY Geneseo, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Penn State. She was Assistant Professor of Anthropology and coordinator of Archaeological Studies at SUNY Potsdam before returning to Penn State as a professional academic adviser in 2005. She is a member of the NACADA Research Committee, the Infusing Research Throughout NACADA Taskforce, and the NACADA Theory and Philosophy of Advising Commission.

 

Dr. Peter L. Hagen serves as Director of the Center for Academic Advising at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.  He was the founding Chair of the NACADA Theory and Philosophy of Academic Advising Commission, served as Guest Editor of the NACADA Journal for its Fall 2005 issue on the theory and philosophy of academic advising, and was a member of the task force that wrote “The Concept of Academic Advising.”  For NACADA he currently serves as Chair of the Research Committee and as a member of the Journal’s Editorial Board and the Publications Review Board.  He won the 2007 Virginia Gordon Award for Service to the Field of Advising.  His Ph.D. is in the field of Speech Communication from The Pennsylvania State University.

 

Dr. Julie Traxler is an Assistant Dean and Director of First-Year Advising at the School of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers University. She has worked in advising since 1993. She completed her Doctorate in Education in May 2009 at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education in the Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education program. Her dissertation, entitled “Major Choosing among South Asian American Women: Toward a New Theory of Advising,” was awarded the 2009 NACADA Student Research award (Doctoral level) and was supported by a NACADA Research Grant.
