NACADA's Technology Seminars for Academic Advisors!

Technology of all kinds has become an important aspect of our cultural and educational experience. We bank, buy, and learn online. Many of us are creating, rediscovering, and maintaining relationships online. This seminar provides an opportunity for academic advisors to get hands on experience with Advising-related technologies.  This exciting, interactive, and cost effective seminar is an opportunity for you to gain knowledge and skills you can use in developing strategies for enhancing your work with your advisees and your academic advising program. Each participant will have the opportunity to plan for the use of new technologies in their work, and get feedback on their plans.

Session Descriptions

Introduction to Advising and Web 2.0 Technology: What is it, and how do I use it?

Karen Thurmond, The University of Memphis

Advising 2.0 is an academic advising use for Web 2.0 What does Web 2.0 mean? We will explore the world of social learning, networking, and collaboration by first getting a feel for the World Wide Web as a new location for life as we know it. How has Web 2.0 changed the way student interact, learn, and live life? Learn more about how you would use Web 2.0 in academic advising by getting an understanding of Web 2.0.  During this session we will begin practicing Advising and Web 2.0 principles by collaboratively constructing a glossary of terms in GoogleDocs.

Wikis: Collaborating with Academic Advisors

Laura Pasquini, University of North Texas

Why wiki?  Because learning is social.  Wikis encourage collaboration, learning from each other, and allow for quick information sharing.  This session will emphasize the importance of how collaborative learning works and expectations for those who engage in wiki group learning and staff development. By demonstrating the ease of a wiki and sharing current examples of wikis in advising practice, participants will gain resources and ideas to bring back to their campus.  If you are thinking about collaborative advising & learning with your students and/or staff, you may want to further explore the wonderful world of wikis.

Advising with Social Bookmarks

Laura Pasquini, University of North Texas

Two heads are better than one. Multiple resources shared are better than none. Social bookmarking is a method for individuals to share, organize, search and manage bookmark resources online, anywhere! When bookmarks are shared socially, individuals can add descriptions, make comments and include tags to make this reference more meaningful and simple to retrieve at a later date. Advisors can learn how to utilized shared references and online resources for group collaboration, professional development, and advising research practices.

Now that I know what Web 2.0 can do for me, How do I share it when I go home??

Steve Davis-Rosenbaum, University of Kentucky

A Web 2.0 workshop can be overwhelming—Do I twitter or blog?  Or Should my advisees visit me via a WIKI or Facebook? Or Do I start everything and see what survives? AND most importantly - am I going to have to do this all by myself??  Why not lead a workshop when you get home!  Steve Davis-Rosenbaum will discuss his experience coming back from a NACADA Technology conference and being in charge of sharing information and developing a Communication Plan.  He will introduce BLUE 2.0 and give resources to develop your own Web 2.0 training program for staff and advisors.
