Why a NACADA Summer Institute

The Summer Institute experience is based on a week-long program providing you and/or your team the opportunity to develop a customized Action Plan based on needs at your particular institution. This process is facilitated by attendance at Foundation Sessions, a choice of topicals and workshops and working daily with a summer institute faculty member and a small group of participants from similar institutional types. Specific objectives are met by participating in every aspect of the institute, from the opening general session on Sunday afternoon until the last presentaiton is made on Friday at noon. Please plan your transportation accordingly.

Quality Advising for Student Development, Retention and Completion

Research in the area of retention, in nearly all instances, concludes that the single most important contributor to student persistence and completion is the development of strong relationships between students and members of the faculty and staff. Because academic advising is the only structured service on the campus in which all students have the opportunity to develop an on-going, one-to-one relationship with a concerned member of the college community, quality academic advising should be a major strategy in every college's retention and completion planning.  

By attending the Institute you will

The institute is designed for individuals or teams who have responsibility for academic advising, such as:

  • Teams or individuals from an institution desiring to refine or redesign campus advising services (see the link to the right for more details on bringing a team) 
  • Advising Program Directors
  • Academic Advising Campus Task Force Members
  • Academic Advisors
  • Academic Counselors
  • Faculty Advisors
  • Campus Administrators including Deans or Vice Presidents with responsibility for advising

We have the solution!

  • Specialized work group for returning teams/individuals with an assigned faculty member,
  • work on your Action Plan in lieu of attending general (Plenary) sessions ,
  • choose to attend the concurrent sessions with all or part of your team or continue work on your action plan
  • focus on moving your action plan forward or crafting an action plan for a new advising initiative.

At the end of your Work Group sessions you will have

  • Participated in discussion of Institute presentations
  • Provided feedback to Work Group Members
  • Created an Action Plan for implementation on your campus
  • Presented Action Plan to peers for feedback
