Annual Academic Advising Summer Institutes - Action Plans in Action!

Action Plan

As a Summer Institute participant, you are given the opportunity to prepare and present (in your discussion group) an ACTION PLAN for solving an advising challenge on your campus. The scope of the action plan is left up to you. The scope may be as narrow as devising a new form or as broad as proposing a new model for delivery of advising on your campus or recommending the use of new technology. You will receive assistance with this project by attending relevant sessions, group discussions, and group & individual consultations with institute facilitators who have expertise in the area you have chosen.  Below are some topics and descriptions of Action Plans that have been proposed and developed at previous Summer Institutes.

The life map will include information leading to an Associate's and Bachelor's degree. Information on how and when to choose majors and how and when to use campus resources. Bridging the Gap from Admission to Registration to Attendance Goal: To reduce the number of adults who apply and register but never show up for the first class. The plan includes 1)identifying the needs of adult learners, 2) identifying the reasons why adults take the first steps but never actually go to class, and 3) developing strategies/procedures for initial advising sessions that will help them to be able to get the assistance/support/information they need. Addressing the Needs of Probationary Students The purpose of this action plan is to help students recover from the pitfalls of academic probation by a) tracking their progress over two years while providing resources and support through the Learning about Excellent Academic Progress (LEAP) with a tutorial program in place. In addition there will be on-going seminars and positive interventions designed for their success.
