Come
One! As a full-time advisor, faculty advisor, or administrator,
attend the Summer Institute to build individual strengths and formulate
action plans for improving or revising advising programs on your
campus.
Come
All! Your institution may want to try the TEAM approach to
strengthening advising by sending a group of advisors and administrators
to the NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes. By the end of
the week, everyone can be on the same page and ready to roll with
reinforcement for continuing strong programs or innovative ideas
for strengthening advising at your institution with a “plan
of action." Some institutions have found it beneficial to send
part of their team to the first institute and others to the second
institute!
Either
way, for the most complete consideration of advising available,
you and/or your team should meet in either St. Paul, MN, or Colorado
Springs, CO, at this year's week-long Summer Institutes. Developing
strong networks among colleagues at the Institutes will be only
one of the benefits to you, your team, and your program. Expert
faculty will share pertinent information in a variety of ways -
through general sessions, workshops, topical sessions, and small
group discussions. You can't afford to miss this chance to make
a difference at your institution through the knowledge you will
gain, as participants will develop an action plan for change on
their campus. For more information on the Institute and examples
of action plans from past participants, visit http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/SummerInst/index.htm.
Group Advising
Thinking about incoming student enrollment
and feeling overwhelmed? "The Sequential Advising Model
for Group Advising: Modifying Delivery Venues for Freshmen and Transfer
Students" at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/AdvisingIssues/group.htm
can help you plan a comprehensive group advising program.
This article by Jane E. Bentley-Gadow and Karen Silverson highlights
a successful group advising program in the College of Education
at the University of Northern Iowa that can be adapted for many
campus situations.
Goal-Setting Resources
Resources that will help you
teach students effective goal-setting techniques are available at
http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Links/Goal-Setting.htm.
Take advantage of the funding opportunities
NACADA offers through research grants. Each year the Research committee
grants stipends up to five thousand dollars ($5,000) to support
a single-year proposal from practicing professionals (administrators
and faculty) and graduate students seeking support for dissertation
research. Grant proposals are due May
16, 2005. Find information and applications at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Research_Related/Grant-Guidelines.htm.
The NACADA Advising
News is published electronically and sent to current NACADA
members four times a year. Watch your inbox for the next issue
which will be sent in late May. The link to past issues is http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Newsletter/archives.htm.
