NACADA is pleased to announce an on-line
Graduate Certificate Program in Academic Advising. This program,
developed and offered in partnership with Kansas State University,
can be utilized as part of a Masters or Doctoral program, a post-Masters
or post-Doctorate certificate, or a stand alone graduate certificate.
The 14 semester credit certificate program will be offered totally
on-line. Students may work at their own pace to complete the
course or courses within a semester/term time frame.
The first course, Foundations of Academic
Advising, will be offered Fall 2003, and will be taught by Charlie
Nutt, Associate Director of NACADA. For more information on

Early
Registration Deadline: September 12, 2003
The
National Conference Registration Brochure was bulk mailed this
week to everyone who received these Highlights. Allow up to
three weeks for bulk mail to be delivered-in the meantime, the
entire brochure is available online. All sessions are listed
according to advising tracks. Hotel, airline, auto rental and
conference registration information is available.
If
you make airline reservations, note that our official airlines
offer 10% off the lowest applicable restricted roundtrip fare
if you book more than 60 days in advance, and 5% off for less
than 60 days. The 60-day deadline is rapidly approaching!

Academic Advising in Small Colleges and Universities:
Advising as Learning. This new monograph is a compilation
of 13 articles exploring various aspects of advising as it applies
to the small-college environment. Sample topics include:
Advisor Training: Exemplary Practices in the
Development of Advisor Skills. This
practical addition to the monograph series is divided by training
format (workshop, ongoing development and electronic delivery).
Each chapter is written by acknowledged leaders in the field and
highlights exemplary practices from current advisor training programs.
Voice of Experience commentaries provide insight into designing
a training program utilizing each chapter's featured format.

ACADEMIC ADVISING ADMINISTRATORS' INSTITUTE

We are excited to announce the location and dates of the 2004
Academic Advising Administrators' Institute! We hope you
will be able to join us at the TradeWinds Island Grand Hotel,
a four-diamond resort, at St. Pete Beach, Florida, February 2-4,
2004.
The Institute is designed for all levels of advising administrators
whether they are new or experienced, administering centralized
advising programs, or faculty-based advising programs. In
addition, chief student affairs or academic affairs officers can
benefit greatly from this experience and its treatment of administrative
issues.

Also, current plans are for an intensive two-day seminar to immediately
follow the Institute focusing on one specific area of administrative

BY-LAWS BALLOT REMINDER

The Board of Directors approved a By-laws change to be presented
to the membership for a vote. The change would create a
new "Associate" membership category for persons not
employed at an accredited, non-profit institution of higher education.
Retirees & students would be included in the Associate category.
Associate members would not be eligible to hold elected positions
within the NACADA Leadership. They would maintain all additional
rights held by General Members.
Ballots and postage-paid reply envelopes were mailed on June
26 to current NACADA members eligible to vote. Please complete
this ballot and return it (reply envelope provided to U.S. members)
by JULY 18, 2003. At least 10% of the membership
must vote to validate the issue, so please respond promptly. Thank
you.
Congratulations to all 2003 NACADA Award recipients. Results
are listed on the Awards web site at the link below. The
Research Grant awards will be announced in late July. All
award recipients will be formally honored during the NACADA National
Conference in Dallas this fall.

administration. Their names will be posted on a special
page under the "Awards" section of the NACADA web site.

exact name of the award plus the award recipient's name,
position title, department/unit, institution, and e-mail address.
Please note that these advising award recipients do not need to
be current NACADA members.
