A Live Internet-broadcast Webinar Event

Save Time and Energy: Utilize Existing Resources for Advisor Training and Development

If you don’t have funds for summer travel, you’ll definitely want to join us on August 12 for the first offering in our 2008-2009 Webinar series!

Are you an individual advisor seeking budget-conscious ways to enhance your own professional development? Are you an advising administrator responsible for the training and development of advisors in your unit or at your institution? Are you looking for creative ways to use existing professional development resources on your campus? Then this event is for you!

Marsha Miller (NACADA Executive Office) will serve as a co-presenter for the August 12 Webinar - Save Time and Energy: Utilize Existing Resources for Advisor Training and Development.

NACADA Executive Office staff members Leigh Cunningham and Marsha Miller will build on the foundation laid by Pat Folsom and Jennifer Joslin in their April broadcast, Ensuring Advisor Success: Mastering the Art of Advising through the First Year of Advising and Beyond. Plan to join us as we discuss the three areas that advisor training should address (conceptual, informational, relational) and the essential steps for developing the content of an effective advisor training and development program. We’ll share the most common forms of on-campus advisor training, highlight creative resource usage by NACADA members, and take you on a tour through the free resources available in the NACADA Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources.

Registration deadline is August 4, but participation is limited by our Service Provider, so don't miss your chance - Learn More and Register today!

2008 Annual Conference in Chicago - Silent Auction, Book Signing Among the Scheduled Activities

The Registration Brochure was bulk mailed last week to everyone who received these Highlights. Allow up to three weeks for delivery - in the meantime, the brochure is available online now. It has details on Pre-Conference Workshops, hotel reservations, airline and AVIS discounts, optional tours, a networking opportunity for new advisors, both keynote speakers, and highlights of events.

The Conference has two outstanding keynote speakers. On Wednesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. is LaDonna Gatlin. She literally grew up on stage singing with her brothers - the legendary Gatlin Brothers. She chose to “sing a different song” apart from her brothers, empowering people to “sing their own song” as well. She educates, inspires and entertains!

B. Joseph White (President, University of Illinois) is our second keynote speaker, on Thursday, October 2 at 8:30 a.m. White took office as the 16th president of the University of Illinois on Jan. 31, 2005. White has written, taught and lectured extensively on leadership, management, and organizational matters. He is the author of The Nature of Leadership: Reptiles, Mammals, and the Challenge of Becoming a Great Leader (AMACOM, 2007).

A good way to get involved and meet new people is to volunteer for a couple of hours. Sign up by contacting Pam Rodriguez: plewisrodriguez@mccneb.edu.

The brochure lists over 400 individual sessions sorted by advising tracks, so you can find presentations relating to your advising interests. Here are a few sample program titles on current advising topics:

  • Proactive Integrated Advising: Collaborative Advising from Community College to Graduate School
  • Advising 2.0: Engaging Students with Collaborative Online Tools
  • The Probation Process – a Student-Focused Responsibility
  • The Changing View: Advising across Generations
  • E-Mail is for Old People: Wikis, Blogs, and Social Networking Oh My

Fall 2008 Webinars

Begin planning now for Fall Professional Development opportunities on your campus!

During our first two Webinar seasons - on large campuses and small ones - at 2-year and 4-year institutions - academic advisors and advising administrators all around the globe found the Webinar format to be "ideal" for creating and sharing professional development opportunities. (Read some of their responses.)

Advising-related topics for Fall 2008 include how to make the best use of existing resources for professional development, planning for a career in academic advising, communication techniques, and ways to contribute to the body of research in the field of advising. View broadcast dates and titles

The Webinar format is especially useful for stimulating dialogue between faculty advisors, full-time advisors and advising administrators at the unit, department or campus-wide level. All you need is a meeting room with an Internet-connected computer and projection capability.  Participants from previous events recommend that you also consider designating a facilitator and planning time for discussion before and after the broadcast.  Handouts will be provided by each of our Event Presenters.

Participation is limited by our Service Provider to the first 200 registrants, so don't delay - mark your calendars and secure your funding TODAY!  Register for three or more events and SAVE

Would you like to propose a topic for a Webinar?

The Webinar Advisory Board would like to hear what topics YOU would like to see presented in this format and, they would also like you to see what considerations will guide their recommendations for future topics. Review their rubric and submit your ideas.

Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources

Clearinghouse logo

Featured This Month in the Clearinghouse:

  • July brings an increase in the number undecided students enrolling on our campuses.  In Undecided/Open Students, Patrick Slowinski and Kerry Hammock suggest that rather than focusing on a negative state of students' indecision, advisors should focus on students’ openness to options. Advisors should encourage students to develop skills and intentional experiences as part of the exploration process. Hammock has updated the resource listing in this classic Clearinghouse article that delineates major intervention components that can assist you in advising these students.

Exemplary Practices Sought in Career Advising

Ken Hughey, Dorothy Burton Nelson, Joanne Damminger, and Betsy McCalla Wriggins, Editors of the upcoming Handbook of Career Advising are seeking narratives as exemplary practices of integrated career and academic advising centers for possible inclusion in the book. The intent is to identify academic and career advising centers (or academic and career planning centers) characterized by an integrated approach to helping students with their academic and career planning. A section of the book will present narratives of the centers selected and is intended to provide readers with exemplary practices of integrated academic and career advising centers. Professionals associated with integrated academic and career advising centers are encouraged to submit narratives of their work and accomplishments for publication consideration in the Handbook of Career Advising, a Jossey-Bass/NACADA joint publication.

To nominate a program see the application guidelines. Nominations will be accepted through July 11. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain recognition for your program or resource.

Get Involved with NACADA Commissions & Interest Groups

NACADA members may designate up to four Commissions and/or Interest Groups with which to have official affiliation. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or Interest Groups for which you would have voting privileges, receive activity updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as Chair. Although participation in Commissions and Interest Groups is entirely optional for NACADA members, we encourage you to join those of special interest to you, as they are valuable resources for information and networking.

Click on the links for lists of the current Commissions and Interest Groups. More information on a particular Commission or Interest Group can be reviewed on its individual Webpage.

If you would like to designate or change the preferred Commission and/or Interest Group choices with which you would like to be affiliated, please complete this online form. Upon receipt of this information, your membership record will be updated accordingly. If you previously made your selections, but do not recall which Commissions or Interest Groups were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to provide your name and institution information when completing this form so the appropriate member record can be updated. If you have any questions, please contact NACADA at nacada@ksu.edu.

NOTE: Your four selections can be any combination of Commissions and Interest Groups. You can change your Commission and Interest Group affiliations at any time - although you should be aware that this may affect your eligibility for certain awards and elected positions.
