OVERVIEW OF DAILY CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

AIRLINE AND AUTO RENTAL DISCOUNTS

  • American, Delta, Northwest, Southwest and US Airways, as well as AVIS car rental, are offering discounts to our attendees.

TOURS

  • Ultimate Venture is offering some great optional tours, including lunch at the Southfork Ranch (of the Dallas television series fame), a shopping excursion, a tour of historic Fort Worth including several museums, and a Dallas tour of modern and historic districts. You can also have dinner and spend an evening at the horse races, rodeo, or the largest honky-tonk in the world!

The NACADA Board of Directors has approved a partnership with Kansas State University's (KSU) College of Education to provide a Graduate Certificate Program focusing on Academic Advising. The 14 Semester Credit Hours will be delivered entirely "at a distance" so that advisors can complete the program without being in residence at KSU. The first courses will be available this Fall. Watch the NACADA web site for more information and costs as they become available.

All NACADA members should be receiving a complimentary copy of "The Family Guide to Academic Advising", a new joint publication from NACADA and the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. This guide is an excellent resource for distribution to new students and their families during orientation or other new student programs.

Orders can be placed with NACADA or the National FYE Resource Center.

Featured this month in the Clearinghouse:  Producing A Comprehensive Academic Advising Handbook.

Have you always meant to compile an advisor handbook but just didn't know where to begin?  Then the Clearinghouse's newest Advising Issue overview is for you.  Jerry Ford, long time presenter on this timely topic, lends his expertise to all wanting to produce a handbook. Jerry's sage advice can help you have a new handbook ready for advisors this fall!

Advising Course Information Needed

Does your campus offer a course dealing solely with academic advising?

The NACADA Clearinghouse is compiling a list of academic advising courses.  If your institution offers a course dealing solely with academic advising, e-mail Marsha Miller at miller@ksu.edu.   Be sure to include the institution name (with link), the course's number, name and description.  Also, if known, send the course format (traditional classroom, on-line, etc) as well as term(s) the course is offered and instructor.

Help us compile an updated list of available advising courses!

Authors solicited:   Beginning with Journal issue 23(1), Spring Journal issues will feature articles dealing with aspects within one Facet of advising. Articles are now being solicited from the general membership and individual commissions for the following issues:

  • Advising Administration (Spring 2004 Journal issue)
  • Advising on Different Education Levels (Spring 2005 Journal issue)
  • Advising In the Disciplines (Spring 2006 Journal issue)

Advising Administration Issue Information and Deadline:  Topics applicable to this upcoming Journal issue include various phases of administration.   These include, but are not limited to: assessment, preventing advisor burnout, legal issues, use of technology, working with faculty advisors, training and development, and student retention.

Titles and abstracts for this issue will be due October 1, 2003 with the finished articles due December 1, 2003.  The Advising Administration issue will be published Spring, 2004. Check the NACADA Journal Web site for other Facet issue deadlines and information.

Changes to the NACADA by-laws are being put forth to the membership by the Board of Directors for a vote. If passed, these changes would give voting rights to retiree and student members, and require a member to be employed at an accredited non-profit institution of higher education to be eligible to run for and hold an elected position within the NACADA Leadership.

Ballots and postage-paid reply envelopes will soon be mailed to current NACADA members eligible to vote. Please complete this ballot and return it in the reply envelope provided to U.S. members by JUNE 27, 2003. At least 10% of the membership must vote to validate the issue so please respond promptly. Thank you.
