Announcing the NACADA Emerging Leaders Program

The NACADA Board of Directors is excited to announce the new Emerging Leaders Program.

The Diversity Committee has developed the NACADA Emerging Leaders Program to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to purse elected and appointed leadership positions, to increase the number of leaders from diverse groups and to encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations to attend state, regional or annual conferences.

Diversity, as defined by the NACADA Board of Directors, includes ethnicity, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation as well as diversity in regard to institutional type, size and employment position. Involvement in the Association also is viewed broadly including leadership at many levels (within the division units, at the division level, at the Council level, at the Board of Directors level and with the various work groups, ad hoc committees, Advisory Boards and task forces), serving on the Consultants' Bureau, writing for the NACADA Journal, Academic Advising Today, and the NACADA Clearinghouse of Advising Resources, or presenting at state, allied member, regional and annual conferences.

Annually 10 Emerging Leaders and 10 Mentors will be selected for the two-year program in which the leaders and mentors will work closely on connecting the leaders to the areas of the Association they are interested in and in developing a plan for continued involvement and growth in the Association. Leaders selected will receive for the first year of the program $1,500 to assist them with travel to state, regional and annual conferences.

In addition to these leaders, the 10 NACADA regions will invest at least $1,000 annually toward supporting Emerging Leaders in the regions. More information on the region focus will be forthcoming.

Applications for both Emerging Leaders and Mentors are due May 14, 2007.

NACADA April Webinar

Student Learning Outcomes: Evidence of the

Teaching and Learning Components of Academic Advising

Don't miss this live Webinar Event, which will be broadcast over the Internet on Wednesday, April 4, 2007

Historically, academic advising has moved from a clerical activity to a student-centered activity to the present recognition of academic advising as an integral learning experience of the college community and culture. However, until college campuses move away from only program or delivery outcomes that primarily focus on the behaviors of those planning and delivering the advising experiences and begin to carefully develop, teach and measure student learning outcomes for academic advising, advising will continue to be on the "edge" of the learning mission of the college campus.

In this NACADA-sponsored Webinar presentation, Tomarra Adams (Assistant Dean of Advising & Student Services and Assistant Professor for Pan-African & Women & Gender Studies at the University of Louisville) will provide a foundation for the development of student learning outcomes as well as hands-on strategies for teaching these outcomes, activities and experiences for students, and strategies for measuring the outcomes.

Participants will learn:

  • how student learning outcomes must clearly relate to the institutional or unit's advising mission.
  • how to develop student learning outcomes that express what students should know, do and appreciate.
  • how to develop instructional strategies and experiences for students.
  • strategies for measuring the student achievement of the learning outcomes.

March 23rd is the last day to register, but participation is limited by our Service Provider and the event is likely to fill before that date, so visit the Webinar Webpage to learn more and REGISTER today!

Mark your calendar now for June 12, 2007 - Webinar 5: Expanding Your Comfort Zone: Strategies for Developing and Demonstrating Cultural Competence in Academic Advising. Our Presenter will be Blane Harding (Colorado State University). Webpage will be available soon!

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Third Annual

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Burlington, Vermont

June 21-22, 2007

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of four-year institutions, almost 50% of public two-year colleges, and 80% of private two-year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that they have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process. This two-day seminar will provide faculty with the skills they need to be more effective advisors as well as hands-on strategies and material that faculty and administrators can take back to their campuses to share with other faculty advisors.

NOTE: The seminar begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 21 and ends on Friday, June 22 at 3 p.m. The ending time is a change from what was previously published, so please adjust your departure plans accordingly.

Faculty for the 2007 Faculty Seminar will be:

Marti Hemwall, Lawrence University

Kathy Stockwell, Fox Valley Technical College

Peggy Jordan, Oklahoma City Community College

Jayne Drake, Temple University

Reserve your hotel room early - the block may fill before the the June 1 deadline. Click here to learn more.

The intensive, week-long Institutes are centered around seeking and disseminating information in general sessions, workshops, topical sessions and small group discussions, with the goal of developing practical, individualized Action Plans for enhancement of academic advising on your campuses. Participants in the Burlington Institute will want to consider attending the Effectively Engaging Faculty Seminar immediately preceding the Institute.

Potential Interest Groups Formed

The NACADA Commission and Interest Group Division has received proposals to form three Potential Interest GroupsAcademic Coaching, Ethics & Legal Issues in Advising, and History of Academic Advising. A Web page has been created for each of these groups on which a short description of its purpose and focus is posted along with the contact information for its initial Chair. If you have questions or would like to become involved with one of these groups prior to the fall Conference, please contact the Chair of that group. To designate one or more of these potential Interest Groups as one of your four chosen Commission or Interest Group preferences in your member record, please e-mail NACADA.

NACADA/NCAA Partnership Initiatives Update

2007 Academic Reform Institute: A Game Plan for Student-Athlete Success

To promote the "total" understanding of the student-athlete's path to academic success, the NCAA and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) have partnered to provide educational opportunities for academic advisors, athletic counselors and other campus staff (both inside and outside athletics) responsible for student-athlete academic support and for eligibility certification at Division I institutions.

This partnership has created the Academic Reform Institute: A Game Plan for Student-Athlete Success scheduled for May 30 - June 1 in Colorado Springs , Colo.

The Institute will explore best practices known to contribute to successful institutional support for student-athletes and assist participants in developing models and action plans focused on enhancing institutional practices contributing to the academic success of student-athletes. Incorporating information from practicing administrators, discussions with peers and institutional "team" analysis, participants will examine institutional practices that can be enhanced to build their institution's capacity for ensuring the academic success of student-athletes. Experienced administrators will provide guidance and consultation throughout the process and provide a network of support following the Institute.

The institute will employ a team-based format (3-4 people), which will not only allow campus colleagues to strengthen their own alliances as they work together during small group discussion sessions, but also will give them an opportunity to develop a network outside their respective institutions.

The registration fee to cover the conduct of the Institute will be provided by the NCAA and institutional "teams" selected for participation will only be responsible for their travel, lodging, and meals (not included the Institute's schedule). Applications will be available at www.nacada.ksu.edu beginning Monday, March 5. The deadline to return the application to NACADA is Saturday, March 31. At that time applications will be considered by the NCAA. Institutions selected to attend the Institute will be notified by NACADA by April 15 and provided necessary details, such as pre-Institute team "homework" requirements and host hotel reservation information.

Academic Reform and the Student-Athlete Non-Credit Online Course

The NCAA and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) partnered to offer the online course Academic Reform and the Student-Athlete which opened for the 2007 Spring term on Monday, Feb. 19.

This introductory-level course was developed for use by academic advisors, athletic counselors and other campus staff (both inside and outside athletics) responsible for student-athlete academic support and for eligibility certification at Division I institutions. The goal of the course is to provide an avenue for staff members who work campus-wide to receive training on the NCAA Division I rules and regulations, as well as to gain information on basic principles for advising students, with an emphasis on advising student-athletes and improving academic success.

There was overwhelming interest in the course, and all 150 spots were filled by institutions opting to designate a representative to take the course for free. Feedback from course participants will be gathered and planning for the next course will soon be underway. If you'd like to be notified when the next course is available, please send your name and email to nacada@ksu.edu .

NACADA Membership Renewal
Renewal forms were sent in January to those whose memberships expire on March 1, 2007.  Please complete and return your form to the Executive Office at your earliest convenience to assure uninterrupted membership status.  Renewal forms may also be returned with Regional Conference registration forms.  Thank you for your continuing support of NACADA as we work to promote the value of effective advising in Higher Ed and provide resources to assist advisors in the development of students.

The Highlights is a monthly summary of NACADA news and events designed to inform members via one consolidated webpage.
