CLEARINGHOUSE FEATURES

CHANGING FACULTY ROLES

The American Council on Education's monograph, "The New Professoriate: Characteristics, Contributions, and Compensation", reveals that only 38 percent of all instructional faculty are full time and in a tenured or tenure-track position. The monograph summarizes data from the recently released "National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty" by the U.S. Department of Education. These data, collected in 1998, also show that 49 percent of faculty teach part time, with the remaining 13 percent teaching full-time in non-tenure-track positions or at institutions without a tenure system.

These data have significant implications for advising and the delivery of advising. How can we best design an advisor training program for faculty who are not full-time faculty? How can students most effectively interact with faculty who may not have teaching as their primary focus?

More findings from the survey are presented in the monograph, which can be ordered at the ACE website.
