At
the end of a busy enrollment day the parent of one of your advisees
calls demanding that you discuss this student's academic progress.
Can you? FERPA, and how your institution interprets
it, impacts what you can disclose. Find the answer to this
and more as attorney, faculty advisor, and NACADA member Bill Van
Dusen explains "FERPA: Basic Guidelines for Faculty and
Staff. A Simple Step-by-Step Approach For Compliance" at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Resources/FERPA-Overview.htm.
This article is meant to give advisors a "hands-on" document
we can print and hang on our bulletin boards for easy reference.
2004
marks NACADA's 25th anniversary. In celebration of this event,
the Clearinghouse is featuring articles from the archives
of the Academic Advising News. This
month we revisit "Tips on Making Effective Referrals in Academic
Advising" http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Resources/Referral-Tips.htm,
a 1991article by Jack Roundy, long-time NACADA member. From
those experiencing the challenges of their first enrollment period
to the most experienced advisors in the field, these suggestions
are timeless.
Information
on the 2005 NACADA Leadership elections is available online at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Election/index.htm,
including a list of positions to be elected, eligibility criteria
for these positions, and the current list of nominees. Nominees
are currently in the process of either accepting or declining their
nominations. After November
8, the final slate of candidates should be available and
candidate platform statements will be linked to their names on the
candidate list for your review. Additional details on the
2005 elections and online voting process will be sent to members
in December.
A
proposal submitted by the Commission and Interest Group Division
was passed at the leadership meetings in Cincinnati that changes
the policy for member selection of commissions and interest groups
(IGs). In the past, members could choose up to two commissions
and/or up to two IGs with which to have official affiliation.
The new policy allows members to choose any
combination of commissions and IGs up to a total of four (4) selections.
This official affiliation primarily identifies those commissions
and/or IGs for which you would have voting privileges, receive periodic
electronic newsletters and updates, and be eligible to hold an elected
or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or
serving as chair. Please note that you can informally be involved
with as many other commissions or IGs as you like, such as being
on list serves, attending meetings, etc.
As a result of this new policy, some of you may now wish to change
your preferred commission and/or IG choices. If so, please
complete and submit the online form at the link below. Once
this form is submitted, your membership record will be updated accordingly.
If you recently made selections on your membership renewal
but do not recall which commissions or interest groups were designated,
you can simply indicate your current preferences via this online
form and previous choices will be replaced. www.nacada.ksu.edu/CandIGDivision/CIGD-Commission-IGDesignationForm.htm
Applicable membership-related web pages and forms are currently
being revised accordingly to reflect this new policy. If you
have any questions, please contact NACADA.
The
2005 Awards Call for Nominations is currently being revised and
should be available online in mid-November. Members will be
notified when the 2005 Call information has been posted to our web
site. A link to the 2005 Awards Call web site will also be
provided via e-mail in the monthly member Highlights. Please
note that the printed booklets with nomination information and forms
are no longer mailed to members. The
deadline for the receipt of 2005 awards nominations will be March
7, 2005.
Until the 2005 Awards Call is available, the information for last
year's awards program is still available on our web site and will
provide you with a general idea of the basic content for the nomination
packets or applications. However, it is possible that selected
criteria may change for various award categories in 2005 so please
be sure to refer to the 2005 Awards Call before submitting your
final nomination materials. For example, minor
changes will be made to the Outstanding Advising and New Advisor
Award criteria regarding the number of years that must pass after
receiving an award or certificate of merit before becoming eligible
for an advising award in a different advising category.
The name of the electronic publication awards will be changed to
Advising Technology Innovation Awards, beginning with the
2005 awards. The practice of having specific categories within
these awards will be discontinued in an effort to invite a broad
range of electronic innovations to be nominated. Awards will
be given to the best examples of advising technology. Criteria
for evaluating the submissions will remain the same except for two
additional considerations: interactivity and accessibility.
Members will be encouraged to create technological applications
that engage students, that are accessible to all students, and are
ADA-compliant. More detailed information will be available
soon on the Awards web site.
The responsibility for the solicitation, review and recognition
for the NACADA Research Grants has been transferred entirely to
the Research Committee beginning with the 2005 grant proposal process.
However, the management of the Student Research Award will
remain with the Awards Committee.
Congratulations to the Liberal
Arts Advisors Interest Group for being granted commission
status recently at the 2004 fall leadership meetings in Cincinnati.
This change is effective immediately and the group's web
site has been updated accordingly at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C30/index.htm.
This new commission will elect its new Chair in the upcoming
2005 elections. In the meantime, Karen
Sullivan-Vance will serve as Interim Chair of this new
commission.
