2005 NACADA ACADEMIC ADVISING SUMMER INSTITUTES

For the most complete consideration of advising available, you and/or your team should meet in either St. Paul, MN, or Colorado Springs, CO, at this year's week-long Summer Institutes. Developing strong networks among colleagues at the Institutes will be only one of the benefits to you, your team, and your program. Expert faculty will share pertinent information in a variety of ways - through general sessions, workshops, topical sessions, and small group discussions. You can't afford to miss this chance to make a difference at your institution through the knowledge you will gain as participants will develop an action plan for change on their campus. For more information on the Institute and examples of action plans from past participants, visit http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/SummerInst/index.htm.

FEATURED THIS MONTH IN THE CLEARINGHOUSE

From Advisor Training to Advisor Development: Creating a Blueprint for First-Year Advisors.  Pat Folsom, Jennifer Joslin, and Frank Yoder explore issues that can help new advisors experience success.

CUES SURVEY

On February 14, one NACADA member at each of 1500 U.S. colleges and universities received the Commission on Undecided and Exploratory Students (CUES) Major Changer survey. Survey authors seek to gather data regarding students who changed majors during the 2003-04 academic year.

Interest in this information is high and responses are positive, although institutions have found that retrieval of this information can be a challenge. To accommodate the need for extra time to retrieve data, the CUES survey has been extended through March 17.

Find survey information at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Research_Related/CUES-major-changer.htm. Access the survey to input your campus data at https://surveys.ksu.edu/Survey/takeSurvey.do?offeringId=33994. Preliminary data from the CUES survey will be shared at the CUES Commission meeting at the 2005 NACADA National Conference in Las Vegas.

RESEARCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Take advantage of the funding opportunities NACADA offers through research grants. Each year the Research committee grants stipends up to five thousand dollars ($5,000) to support a single-year proposal from practicing professionals (administrators and faculty) and graduate students seeking support for dissertation research. Grant proposals are due May 16, 2005. Find information and applications at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Research_Related/Grant-Guidelines.htm.

RESEARCH REGISTRY

Are you researching an advising topic for your institution, thesis or dissertation?  Want to connect with others researching the same topic? The NACADA Research Committee sponsors an informal research registry to stimulate communication among those researching advising topics. Use the Registry form to be matched with others researching similar topics. Email addresses will be provided to all collaborating researchers.

K-STATE/NACADA GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN ACADEMIC ADVISING

Want to learn more about academic advising? Interested in graduate credit for course work? Kansas State University, in collaboration with NACADA, offers graduate students, advisors (both professional and faculty), new advisors, and experienced advisors the opportunity to study advising and its various components while earning graduate credit. Apply today! For more information go to http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/GraduateCertificate/index.htm.

ELECTION SURVEY

NACADA would like to thank those members who voted in the recent 2005 NACADA Leadership elections. The member voter response rate was 20.8% for these elections. To assist with our efforts to increase the percentage of members voting, we would like to hear why members chose not to vote in these leadership elections.

If you did NOT vote and would like to share with us your reasons for not voting, please click on the following link and complete the short survey provided. Your responses will be anonymous. This survey will be available until March 15.
