Our
title explains our focus but the issues are more complex than
they may seem at first. First-gens are represented in virtually
all areas of NACADA study but are not often studied in detail.
What does it mean to be a first-generation student? How does
one navigate the complexities of Academe with only limited
family guidance and support? Is there financial support specifically
for first-gens? What barriers do first-gens face that other
students do not? Does first-gen status make a difference in
academic success? This interest group welcomes your input.
Some
first-generation college students enter a college or university
through a Federal TRIO Program; many do not. To learn more
about Federal TRIO Programs, click on "Resources" (in the
left-hand column).
