Greetings, Pre-Law Advising Interest Group Members,

I write to introduce myself as the new NACADA Pre-Law Advising Interest Group Chair. Like many of you, pre-law advising is one part of my job, which is one of the reasons why I view the work of this group as so important — it is difficult to stay on top of all the details involved with advising students about law school when you are performing many other tasks. I hope this group can be a resource for questions and a forum for new ideas for the advisors and administrators who could really use the support from others in similar positions. As I start this position mid-year, I am all the more eager to hear your feedback about the group and suggestions for future directions.

In reviewing the past goals and objectives of the interest group, there is one in particular that we can act upon immediately, which is to increase the size of the interest group.  I would also like to increase the numbers of subscribers to the pre-law interest group list serve, which is a separate but related goal, to facilitate a broader range of communication. A task that I have already moved forward on is the formation of a Steering Committee. Ned Muhovich, Director of Academic Advising at the University of Denver, and Bruce Allen, Pre-Law Advisor at Iowa State University, have graciously volunteered to join the committee. I hope the Steering Committee will be a source of feedback about the resources the group is and should be providing. Correspondence with the Steering Committee will be done mostly via e-mail, and the telephone to a lesser extent; therefore, in-person attendance at meetings will not be required.
