PURPOSE/GOALS of the Study Abroad Advising Interest Group
Commission
and Interest Group Division Information (taken
from NACADA web site) —
The
CIG Division represents members with special advising areas of interest.
Interest Groups are created when there is a need to focus on specific
issues or represent a particular interest of NACADA members.
Study
Abroad Advising Interest Group Meeting Abstract (printed
in NACADA conference program) — Study abroad participation
is increasing nationally and is ever more integral to the undergraduate
degree. Students who study abroad gain valuable skills to support
their academic and career plans. Advisers may be called upon to
motivate students to study abroad, to discuss study abroad options
with interested advisees, to evaluate courses for academic credit,
and/or to discuss financing study abroad. These varied needs of
students mean that advisers unfamiliar with study abroad and advisers
who wish to encourage study abroad among their advisees need knowledge,
tools, and resources.
The
Study Abroad Advising Interest Group seeks to involve NACADA members
to:
- enhance adviser knowledge of study
abroad
- share strategies, tools, and materials
for advising students interested in study abroad
- establish a clear role and leadership
for the study abroad interest group within NACADA
- create partnerships between NACADA’s
leaders, academic advisers, study abroad professionals, and other
interested parties
