Dear
NACADA colleagues,
As
you think about your professional development goals for the year
and/or make preparations to attend the NACADA national conference
in Las Vegas, I encourage you to lend your expertise to the NACADA
Study Abroad Advising Interest Group and to join
us for the events planned for the October conference!
Study
abroad is a growing interest among both advisers and students. This
level of interest is reflected in the number of sessions related
to study abroad being offered in Las Vegas, in just the second year
of the new Study Abroad Advising Interest Group. Check out the scheduled
topics at www.nacada.ksu.edu/NationalConf/2005/tracks/abroad.htm.
I’d
especially like to invite you to attend the Study
Abroad Advising Interest Group meeting,
Thursday, October 6th from 2-3 p.m. in the Chablis Room of the Paris
Hotel (please check your final schedule when you
arrive for any last-minute changes). The 2004 national conference
had very strong attendance for the interest group meeting, and as
the new chair for this interest group, I’d like to capture
that momentum and move us forward to new goals and initiatives.
I welcome you to forward this e-mail to interested colleagues in
advising and/or study abroad on your campus and invite them to sign
up for the list serve, join us in Las Vegas, or share their ideas
and issues for you to bring to us on their behalf. list serve subscription
information is available on the NACADA web site at www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C38/list serve.htm.
In
advance of the meeting, feel free to let me know via e-mail at jodim@umn.edu
about the following:
- Are you interested in serving
with me on the Study Abroad Advising Interest Group leadership?
We have needs for help with web site development, list serve discussion
facilitation, or sharing resources and best practices with our
NACADA colleagues.
- Are there “burning issues”
on your campus with regard to study abroad that the interest group
could help with?
- What resources do you need to
develop as a professional in the area of study abroad advising?
- Would you be interested in helping
out at the Study Abroad Advising Interest Group table at the Commission
and Interest Group Fair held during breakfast on Thursday, October
6th?
Also,
please take advantage of the interest group list serve to share ideas,
questions, or resources with each other. Instructions at the link
above will remind you how to post a message
to the list serve. Two examples I’d like to share from the
University of Minnesota are:
- an "academic planning form"
that students at the University of Minnesota fill out with their
academic adviser(s) to determine how study abroad coursework will
fit with their degree requirements: www.umabroad.umn.edu/academic/academicPlanningForm.pdf
- a “study abroad in your major”
advising sheet -- the example at the site below is for English
majors, but we have examples for dozens of other majors as well
on the University of Minnesota Learning Abroad Center web site.
www.umabroad.umn.edu/academic/advisingsheets/english.pdf
Either
resource could be adapted to the needs of advisers on your campus!
I
look forward to hearing from you and meeting many of you in Las
Vegas!
Regards,
Jodi
