Through the use of cartoons, quotes, and stories, Michael Quinn Patton makes the weighty topic of qualitative research more understandable than the title may suggest. Even so, with its expanded length and size from the previous edition, it could never be construed as a light read.

Qualitative research is now more widely accepted in academia as a legitimate inquiry method than it was when the first edition of Patton's book was published in 1980. During the ensuing years, a variety of qualitative methodologies have evolved, providing the current researcher with additional opportunities to find the best method for a specific study. For example, in his 1990 edition, Patton described 10 theoretical traditions, such as ethnography and heuristics, but in this latest rendering, he discussed 16 qualitative approaches, including semiotics and narratology.

This primary audience for the book will undoubtedly be doctoral students preparing to start the dissertation process. Advisors working toward a graduate degree or those preparing to design and implement a research project will find much to guide and assist them in their pursuits. The evaluation process can be significantly aided through the application of Patton's systematic presentation of qualitative models and strategies. They should also be attentive to Patton's strong coverage of two of the most challenging aspects of qualitative research: how to analyze and interpret data, and how to enhance soundness and credibility.

Rather than use it as a standard resource to support daily practice, academic advisors will be most apt to consult this book for specific research or evaluation projects. However, all will want to read Patton's outstanding section on qualitative interviewing. If the quintessential act of advising is the student-advisor interview, then this book provides a tool for those wanting to reexamine and upgrade their techniques.

Qualitative Research & Evaluation Methods is a clearly written, well-organized, and comprehensive guide for designing, conducting, and analyzing qualitative studies. While it is not a resource likely to be used daily by advisors, it should have a place in an advising system's professional library.
