Prior to filling this role, the individual must have completed
the previous year as a member in the interest group and be
a current member in that group.
Interest
Group Chairs volunteer for this role and provide leadership for
interest group activities in support of the profession by representing
its members, communicating with the members, and voicing their
needs and concerns to Division Representatives. Interest Group
Chairs coordinate interest group activities and lead interest
group meetings during the Annual Conference. Interest Group Chairs
report to the Division Representatives for the Commission &
Interest Group Division (CIGD).
Major
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Coordinate various activities of
the interest group and its steering committee, if one exists.
- Steering committee leadership—Interest
Groups are encouraged to form a steering committee, chaired by
the Interest Group Chair. The steering committee members are appointed
by the Interest Group Chair from the current interest group membership.
This committee may be given specific tasks or special projects
as well as provide a valuable support system for the Interest
Group Chair.
- Encourage interest group members
to submit presentation proposals for the NACADA Annual Conference
on critical issues and topics of benefit and interest to its members.
- Manage the interest group table
at the annual Commission and Interest Group Fair at the Annual
Conference.
- Conduct the annual interest group
meeting at the Annual Conference.
- Coordinate regular communication
with interest group members through Executive Office staff.
- Manage
the interest group web site
and submit updates to Executive Office as needed. (Can appoint
a webmaster to help coordinate web content.)

Budgets
to prepare and monitor:

Oversee expenditure of funds allocated
for the Commission and Interest Group Fair held at the
Annual Conference each year.

Interest Groups are not eligible
to request funds beyond those allocated for CIGD Fair.
Written
reports/communications:
-
Communications with members—Announcements
are sent electronically to interest group members as needed
by the Executive Office with content provided by the Interest Group
Chair.

Updates are posted to interest group
web pages by the Executive Office as requested by the Interest
Group Chair.

Utilize
interest group list serve for topical discussions, soliciting
information and ideas from interest group members, or communicating
information to interest group members.

Optional for Interest Group Chairs
— Submit a post-conference Leadership report after the
Annual Conference in the fall in which goals are established
for the interest group and activities planned for the coming
year that are directly related to specific missions within the
NACADA Strategic Plan. If an interest group plans to apply for
commission status, this report should be submitted by the Interest
Group Chair.

Optional for Interest Group Chairs
— Submit annual Leadership report in the summer to advise
the Council and Board on the status of the completion of goals
established and activities planned for the interest group over
the past year in relation to the NACADA missions and strategies.
If an interest group plans to apply for commission status, this
report should be submitted by the Interest Group Chair.

Submit short periodic update reports
to the NACADA Academic Advising Today e-publication
about interest group activities or topics important to the interest
group. Submit a short content-based article on a critical issue
identified by the interest group.
Resources
and Support:

Your institution gives approval
and provides support to your commitment to this position, including
your registration fees and all travel expenses for the Annual
Conference. Expenses incurred in attending the CIG
Division leadership meeting held prior to the Annual Conference
each year are not reimbursable by the Association.

The Executive Office provides staff
assistance for web updates, communications to members, financial
management, membership information and statistics, conference
calls, etc.
