NACADA Highlights - February 2014



Region Conferences in 2014 - Register Now!

From Vancouver, BC to Savannah, GA and 8 points between, the ten NACADA Region Conference Committees are finalizing details for the Spring 2013 meetings! See the schedule and mark your calendars to attend! Also, Call for Proposals are still open for Region 3, 6, 8, 9 & 10!

NACADA offers Graduate Student Region Conference Scholarships that cover the conference registration fee.

     2014 Research Symposium

At the NACADA Research Symposium, researchers at all levels begin to transform ideas into scholarly works. Large and small group discussions, independent work, and one-on-one time with research mentors help participants leave with a viable research question and workable plan to conduct and complete research! 

This year's Symposium will be held on Friday, March 21st and Saturday, March 22nd in conjunction with the Region 1 Conference in Newport, Rhode Island.  Space is limited, so make your plans today!  Learn more and Register.

2014 NACADA Annual Conference

Time to Submit Your Proposal for the 2014 NACADA Annual Conference!

The Call for Proposals submission system is open until February 28. Please consider submitting a presentation proposal for the 2014 Annual Conference – Adventures in Advising: Explore, Discover, Collaborate, Transform to be held October 8-11 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, MN.

We encourage you to submit a proposal whether you are a novice or an experienced presenter. Advantages to submitting a proposal include:

  • Gain international exposure for your ideas, as well as your institution
  • May help secure funding to attend the Conference
  • Establish relationships with, and learn from, colleagues working on similar issues
  • Presenting is a great two-way communication of shared ideas and practices


 2014 NACADA Elections

Leadership Elections – Exercise your right to vote as a NACADA member! Be sure to vote in the 2014 elections February 10-March 3, 2014.  See complete voting and election information, including the slate of candidates, online procedures, voting eligibility and deadlines.

International Conference

The next International Conference will be in 2015. A tentative location is Melbourne, Australia and details will be finalized this spring. Stay tuned for additional information on the exciting event!


Award Nominations are due March 3.  NACADA would like to recognize and honor exemplary academic advisors and outstanding advising programs on your campus.  All award nomination information can be accessed on the Awards Program website.  All submissions are completed online. 

Congratulations to those individuals awarded scholarships to attend the NACADA Administrator’s and Assessment Institutes being held in Albuquerque, NM.




The Emerging Leader–Mentor connection has been described as “a supportive relationship that allows us to challenge each other to fulfill our potentials as leaders in, and contributors to, the field of advising.”  Program participants indicate they feel “more connected to the organization than ever before.”   Take a giant step into being a part of the progress that is being made by NACADA. Research Grants

NACADA aspires to be the premier global association for the development and dissemination of innovative theory, research, and practice of academic advising in higher education.  In support of our vision, the association offers Research Grants for up to $5,000. Applications may be submitted online  February 15 through March 15, 2014.

NACADA-Sponsored Member Surveys

In support of our strategic goal to expand and communicate the scholarship of academic advising, NACADA Research Committee members review all research requests to survey association members prior to survey development and distribution.  The submission process for sponsorship of scholarly inquiry (research) surveys is available on the Survey Guidelines webpage. Applicants are highly encouraged to apply for consideration at least six months prior to intended survey distribution date.  Applications for the next sponsored survey round will be accepted through March 15, 2014.

Veteran Symposium for Higher Education

The 6th Annual Veteran Symposium for Higher Education is scheduled for February 23 - 25, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.  Online registration is available now at http://stuaff.org/veterans.  The symposium is designed to address issues facing student veterans on campus.  Presentations will include research reviews and discussions of best practice programs designed to assist student veterans.  Scheduled topics include civic engagement, academic leadership, student orientation and advising, impact of military sexual trauma, peer advising, tuition policies, and prior learning assessment.   NACADA is a symposium partner for this event.


The NACADA blog is another great platform for NACADA members to discuss topics of interest and concern. Members will be able to share NACADA experiences, research in the field, and make new connections through participation in the blog.
