Position Description
Senior International Student Advisor

Duties
Reporting to the Director, International Student Services, the incumbent offers individual student advising sessions for international students, including advice on immigration matters. Plays a coordination role for the International Student Advising sector at VIU, which includes three International Student Advisors and an International Student Counsellor. Participates in identifying and analyzing the needs of international students, and designing tools, programs and documentation that allow for successful student integration and retention. Works collaboratively with two other International Student Advisors and one International Student Counsellor in providing support for international students in order to facilitate their transition, development, sense of belonging and success at VIU and in the community. This position may be responsible for training and supervising student interns as needed. Advising Provides individual, confidential advising and support for international students regarding administrative, personal or academic matters. When needed, refers students to other VIU resources and professionals such as counseling, disability services, writing support, etc. Responds to student email requests. Updates ISAs database after each meeting with a student, respecting privacy and confidentiality protocols. Provides guidance and acts as a resource person to international students with regard to federal and provincial immigration policies and procedures. Assists students with the resolution of problems related to their immigration documents, to the extent permitted by the level of certification obtained. Refers students to other professionals and ensures follow-up with immigration authorities, as needed. Disseminates current immigration information to relevant VIU colleagues. Keeps abreast of changes in immigration regulations and remains in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council. Keeps abreast of best practices in international student advising. Monitors global events that may have an impact on VIU students and families. Ensures that students are offered student-centered, culturally-sensitive and appropriate services during their life cycle at VIU. Serves as a resource person and liaison for international students with campus faculty and staff, families, community members, and other organizations on issues related to international student advising. Develops and maintains working relationships with relevant internal and external partners. May represent the International Student Advising sector on various committees and working groups on campus and at regional and national meetings. Coordination Provides coordination for the international student advising sector. In collaboration with ISS team and other colleagues in the Faculty of International Education, identifies areas that need improvement. In particular, the incumbent will develop and update communication tools and contents (webinars, website pages, and social media). Proposes, develops and implements new ideas and projects. Works with ISS Administrative Assistant and other colleagues to provide reports and statistics as requested by the Director of ISS. Reports to Director of ISS on a regular basis regarding current issues and challenges. Makes recommendations for changes to office and University policies and procedures to improve services to international students. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
Graduate degree in a related field (such as education, psychology, communications, international relations) from an accredited institution, or equivalent. Seven years related experience working with international students or in an international context. RCIC certification as an immigration consultant. Team player with excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skills. Experience in designing and facilitating educational workshops. Autonomy, demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in a language other than English. Experience living and/or working overseas. Web page editing and social media expertise.
