Position Description

The Penn State College of Engineering Office of Academic Support and Global Programs is looking for an experienced advisor with strong interest in advancing the scholarship of advising for the new position of Director of Engineering Advising Innovation and Assessment. At Penn State, students typically spend their first three to four semesters as pre-major students before officially entering into a major. The College of Engineering (COE) has pre-major students at most Penn State campus locations across the state, with more than half located at the University Park (UP) campus. Advising for the UP pre-major students is centralized in the Engineering Advising Center (EAC) staffed by multiple professional advisers. Pre-major advising at other Penn State locations is done locally by advisors at each campus. After students enter their major in the COE, advising is organized independently by each major, under the direction of each major's undergraduate program coordinator who manages the academic advising process. With students getting advising from so many different sources and in so many different formats, the main focus of the Director of Engineering Advising Innovation and Assessment is to work with the undergraduate program coordinators, other in-major advisors, the pre-major advising center at UP, and advisors at the other campuses to facilitate seamless transition from pre-major advising to in-major advising and to help ensure high quality advising once students are in their major.


The Director will report to the Assistant Dean for Academic Support and Global Programs and will be expected to identify and share academic advising best practices from the advising literature to promote advising innovation, lead the development of academic advising student learning outcomes, conduct research on advising effectiveness and publish research results to promote the scholarship of advising, analyze data on student success, and with the Assistant Dean, interpret policies related to academic advising and entrance to major. Through collaboration with a dynamic team of directors across both the Office of Academic Support and Global Programs and the Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion, this individual will be part of new initiatives that span a wide range of College of Engineering undergraduate student support services and have the potential to impact more than 10,000 undergraduate Penn State engineering students.

Required Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have significant experience in academic advising, a strong desire to develop expertise in emerging best practices in academic advising, and a passion for conducting research on the effectiveness of academic advising initiatives.
  • Essential qualities and skills include, but are not limited to planning and management skills, demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, very advanced communication and organizational abilities, creativity, capacity to work with a broad range of stakeholders, ability to solve complex problems, building consensus with diverse audiences, and scholarly curiosity.
  • Typically requires a Master's degree or higher, plus six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
