Position Description

The Academic Advisor II, under general supervision, recruits and advises students concerning their career goals and academic requirements.


  • Delivers academic advice and other services to current and prospective undergraduate students as well as their parents and other clients including University administrator and resource providers; works to improve academic advising services, to enhance retention and graduations rates, to provide exceptional experiences for undergraduate students, and to develop community within and lifelong affinity for the Department of Sociology and the College of Liberal Arts.

  • Reviews degree plans with students and advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns; processes academic changes (Q-drops, withdrawals,curriculum changes, etc.) according to College and University policies. Makes referrals to University and off-campus resources. Assists students requesting appeals. Uses COMPASS for checking student records and processing changes; maintains records of student contacts.

  • Assists with developing and implementing programs for specific student academic populations; evaluates advising services, develops reports for the department including advising activity and internal/external enrollments; analyzes trends; makes recommendations for improvements. Meets with prospective students and families. Responds to inquiries.

  • Responsible for development and implementation of New Student Conferences. Meets with freshmen and transfer students during new student orientation conferences. May develop and conduct high school, community college, and college recruitment programs.

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student employees.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area.
  • Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Requires ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Liberal Arts.

  • Master’s degree or above in education, counseling, liberal arts, or general subject area of placement and two years experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, or other related area.

  • NACADA or TEXAAN certificate of participation.

  • Experience with TAMU policies and procedures; experience with undergraduate degree programs in general subject are of placement.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills.

  • High degree of self-initiative and ability to think and work independently. 

  • COMPASS and HOWDY proficiency.
