Position Description

 

Duties

  • Advise SFRC students on general education requirements and critical tracking; promote retention by engaging freshmen in their major through events, courses, and similar.
  • Engage with a diverse population of potential freshmen through Preview advising,  First Year Florida instruction, the UF Exploratory program, and relevant high school-level programs, such as FL 4H groups, FFA, magnet school programs, etc.; help develop a Peer Advisor program – Identify and train student peer advisors.
  • 20% - Engage with students and parents in inquiries/visits for freshman admission; supplement advising/registration during peak times (lower- and upper-division) to assist all SFRC undergraduate students.
  • Track and analyze data regarding the results of various recruiting efforts (lower-and upper-division), using social media metrics and spreadsheet/database    software; Assist the Academic Advisor II in coordinating communications efforts for potential students (lower-and upper-division) using social media and targeted email distribution software, such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility; or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility and one year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a field related to one of the School of Forest Resources & Conservation’s undergraduate majors. Knowledge of professional employment in the broad field of natural resource management and/or Geomatics.
  • Experience working in an academic institution is desired, and direct familiarity with the University of Florida is preferred; experience with UF advising and/or recruiting a diverse student population and freshman students is highly desired.
  • Experience with UF Preview Advising and UF’s First Year Florida course – staffer, instructor, and/or participant – is desired.
  • Must be personable and able to interact with students, parents, faculty, staff and visitors – in person, via written communications, and on the telephone – with a high degree of enthusiasm, and professionalism. This includes comfort with public speaking to large and small groups on a regular basis.
  • Experience engaging with diverse populations using various social media platforms is desired. Must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook; proficiency with desktop publishing software (MS PowerPoint, Adobe CS, etc.) is highly desired.
  • The incumbent must be organized, able to communicate clearly and accurately, pay attention to detail, be self-motivated and able to work independently, and be able to meet deadlines on a regular basis.
  • A service-oriented attitude is necessary, and discretion and judgment in working with highly confidential information is essential.
