Position Description

The primary role of the Academic Advisor will be to advise a large student load of 500+ undergraduate students in the Poole College of Management regarding academic requirements (matriculation through graduation), course selection and registration, and other issues related to academic and student success (i.e. international study, student organizations, internships). The Academic Advisor will teach one section of a personal and professional identity development course to undergraduate students each semester. The Academic Advisor will support various efforts in the Office of Undergraduate Programs as needed (including orientation, welcome week, commencement, etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in academic advising at the college level, preferably in a business program
  • Strong communication skills: oral, written, and presentation
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate advising
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse array of personalities under pressure and deadlines
  • Ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages in a confidential environment
  • Appreciation for various perspectives, identities, backgrounds, ages and educational goals of current undergraduate students
  • Comfort speaking to large groups
  • Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills
  • Ability to effectively manage large student caseloads

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with successfully managing a large caseload of students
  • Experience teaching courses incoming first-year, off-campus transfer and CODA (Change of Degree Application), students
  • Evidence of effective presentations delivered in a large-group environment
