Position Description

Duties

ADVISING 50%

  • Proactively advise approximately 150-175 new CLA students through the process of formulating a personalized educational plan, utilizing a variety of academic advising strategies including one-on-one and group advising
  • Advise and communicate to re-enrolling and international students
  • Assist students in developing and enhancing self-awareness regarding values, passions and strengths
  • Monitor student progress and intervene, as needed, with appropriate referrals and resources related to academic difficulties
  • Provide ongoing support to students seeking assistance through CLA Advising and Academic Services
  • Be a resource for faculty advisors and departmental staff
  • Establish and maintain connections with assigned departments, programs and student groups
  • Mentor students on the career exploration process throughout their undergraduate experience
  • Be a liaison between students, University officials and the community
  • Actively participate in the development of strategies for recruiting, admissions, enrollment and academic advising
  • Serve and actively participate as a member of our office and on various campus committees
  • Engage in professional development

RECORDS 40%

  • Maintain advising records
  • Organize, review or process applications (UMD admission, change of college, dual degree, & re-enrollment)
  • Maintain detailed spreadsheets regarding applications
  • Process course equivalencies within APAS (multi-institutional, study abroad)
  • Provide reports as requested

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 6 years
  • At least one year of academic advising experience (high school or college)
  • Demonstrated excellent written communication skills
  • Experience working independently, collaboratively, and under supervision
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Google

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA degree in liberal arts
  • Knowledge of liberal arts degrees and requirements
  • Three or more years of relevant academic advising experience
  • Experience working with complex systems in a fast-paced and structured setting
  • Demonstrated engaging interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, strong organizational skills and time management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equal opportunity and diversity initiatives
  • Familiarity with personal and career development issues for undergraduate students
  • Experience with advising tools such as PeopleSoft, Graduation Planner, APAS or other degree-audit systems
