Position Description

The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of California, Riverside seeks a Director of CHASS F1RST, first-year and transition programs to improve undergraduate retention and graduation rates by creating proactive programs and services to empower students to succeed academically and personally. The Director will provide vision, strategic direction, and accountability for developing programs and services that support undergraduates’ academic transition and success at UCR. The Director will work collaboratively with other units, including the Office of Academic Advising, Office of Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Institutional Research, Undergraduate Admissions, and Departments and Programs in CHASS. Position Purpose: This position reports to the Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs of CHASS. Serves as the CHASS F1RST Learning Community Coordinator. Provides leadership and support for the administration of the CHASS F1RST Learning Communities with over 90% of first-year CHASS students participating annually (in 2016-17AY). Responsible for developing and implementing methods to create and manage the program including assessment of student needs, creating programming to address needs, recruitment, and monitoring of students in programs, and program assessment. Creates quarterly CHASS Learning Communities course blocks. Enrolls students in appropriate programs, and works with appropriate college staff to ensure smooth course scheduling. Serves as instructor of record for peer mentor led workshops and courses for students on academic probation as well as courses for transfer students in their first year at the university.

Duties

Program Management Implements and coordinates the CHASS F1RST program. Responsibilities include appropriate advertisement of all programs to faculty, staff, the campus, and the community at large via creation, maintenance, publication, and distribution of brochures/posters/mailings and updating material for website upload; recruitment of qualified student applicants for each program; and implementation of appropriate academic enrichment activities including skill development workshops, cultural and leadership programs, speaker series, undergraduate research opportunities, laboratory safety protocols, and research symposium. Also responsible for recruitment of appropriate faculty mentors for all programs. Serves as CHASS liaison to the Registrar’s Office, the Academic Resource Center, and various campus academic departments to schedule appropriate course sections and ensure timely freshman involvement in CHASS Learning Communities. Responsible for student tracking, effort reporting, and program assessment including evaluating the effectiveness of the programs by collecting and analyzing data on student enrollment, academic success, persistence, retention, and graduation rates. Recommend necessary changes in programming to the CHASS Associate Dean to ensure student and program success. Program Development Implements new procedures and guidelines for handling program processes for all programs, as well as a proper procedure for handling exceptions within program guidelines. Responsible for communicating the activities, progress, and needs of the programs to the Associate Dean. In consultation with the Associate Dean, establishes quantitative and qualitative standards for measurement of performance of participants in the CHASS Learning Communities. Collects and analyzes data to generate regular program reports. Serves as a recognized resource of program knowledge regarding the CHASS F1RST program. Recommend changes in relevant policies to higher administrative levels. Student Advising Advises students, faculty, and public on University, campus, and program requirements, policies, and procedures for the CHASS Learning Communities. Advises students on eligibility for program participation. Assist students with program enrollment and enrollment in appropriate Learning Communities. Assist students in revising Learning Communities enrollment when necessary. Advises students on requirements for participation, adequate progress in, and goals for all programs. Assists in helping students find appropriate faculty mentors, mentors students on process of presenting at research conferences, and participating in undergraduate research internships. Identifies students with program progress challenges and recommends appropriate intervention strategies/referrals. Response to inquiries and investigate and resolve problems related to transactions for all programs within established program guidelines. Instructional Duties Serve as instructor in charge for Peer Mentor led workshops for the First Year Program and for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences lecture and discussion sections for transfer students and students who are on academic probation. Supervision Recruits, selects, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student assistant(s) to assist in program operation. Responsible for all personnel actions including hiring, training, evaluation, termination, and conflict resolution.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • MA required in Education, Counseling, Student Personnel/Development. Open to interdisciplinary approaches in the Humanities and Social Science.
  • 3 years of experience working with college students with diverse background
  • Significant and increasingly responsible supervisory experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job such as appropriate funding guidelines, and the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to a PhD degree in Education, Counseling, Student Personnel/Development preferred. Open to interdisciplinary approaches in the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Thorough understanding of principles, practices and procedures involved in FYE program development, theoretical models, best practices and current issues supporting in first-year student transition, development, and retention.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in First-Year Experience programs and demonstrated success with FYE initiatives, such as learning communities
  • Experience with data collection and analysis: ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to student success, student learning outcomes, and program success
  • Excellent collaborative, and computer skills, with the ability to engage with wide diversity of faculty and staff.
