Position Description




  • Serves as academic counselor for students in the Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communication.
  • Supports the planning and delivery of academic advising/counseling services offered through Gaylord College Student Services Office, as well as organizes programs and events which promote comprehensive opportunities for all students within the college.
  • Works closely with Gaylords communications director to develop new informational material.
  • Maintains full undergraduate student records for majors within the college under the positions oversight and for 4+1 degree.
  • Go-to adviser for Gaylords Coordinator of Community Inclusivity and helps with recruiting efforts including college tours.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND

  • 18-36 months academic advising/student services
  • Ability to speak, read and write clear, concise English
  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
  • Advanced computer skills with wide knowledge of business software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff
  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines
  • Strong initiative to solve problems
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred bachelors degree in mass communication/media, counseling, communication or psychology
