Position Description

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning is comprised of several units, all of which hold the students we serve at the heart of our institutional mission. One of these units is the Undergraduate Advising Center, which provides comprehensive academic counseling to help students achieve their academic, personal and career goals. The Center assists undeclared students explore and declare a major, identify their strengths and interests, and helps students overcome academic and personal challenges. In addition, the Undergraduate Advising Center helps all students understand SF State graduation requirements (primarily general education), policies, and procedures. Our goal is to encourage self-advocacy, and to promote academic success, graduation, and a lifetime of learning. This position reports directly to the Director of the center and functions under general supervision. The Academic Counselor is responsible for providing consistent, accurate, complex, academic counseling services to current students. Working independently, the counselor will provide individual and group counseling that requires the use of counseling techniques to facilitate major and career exploration, evaluate academic interests, and set goals to facilitate student success, persistence and degree completion in a timely manner. In addition, the incumbent will independently lead, develop, plan, implement and evaluate Undergraduate Advising Center projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Upper-division or graduate coursework in counseling theories and counseling interview techniques.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional work experience in one of the Student Services program areas or a related field (preferably in a higher education environment) is typical.
  • The incumbents experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • Experience advising underrepresented, low-income and first-generation college students and developing programs to support the needs of this population.
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling or related-field.
  • providing effective academic counseling to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, sexual orientation and disability backgrounds in a one-to-one and group setting at a college/university
  • assisting undeclared students explore their major options; providing information on Title V, California State University, and San Francisco State University policies and procedures
  • serving as a lead to develop, plan, implement and evaluate a project
  • conduct presentations in a small and large group setting
  • use PeopleSoft
  • Campus Solutions, Microsoft Office Suite, and Learning Management Systems
