CLA is seeking an innovative Assistant Director of Advising to join the unit’s advising leadership team in a dynamic and evolving work environment. Reporting to the Director of Advising and Student Support Services, the Assistant Director will provide strategic leadership and vision for advising and student services in collaboration with the other Assistant Directors of Advising and key members of CLA Undergraduate Education. Successful candidates will be compassionate and confident leaders with a positive attitude, exceptional work ethic, enthusiasm for the undergraduate experience, strong collaborative abilities, and a record of professional accomplishments in advising and student services. The Assistant Director will play a key role in further strengthening our advising model and will have collective responsibility for ensuring exceptional student service and for advancing unit, collegiate, and campus goals. The Assistant Director will maintain a portfolio of unit-wide leadership responsibilities driven by key strategic objectives and evolving student and staff needs.
Unit and Collegiate Advising Leadership 60%
● Work in collaboration with the Director of Advising, other Assistant Directors, and unit’s leadership team to provide leadership, vision, and strategic thinking for collegiate advising efforts.
● Assume responsibility for a portfolio of duties connected with collegiate and unit goals; develop and implement innovative programs and strategies that enhance retention, degree progress, career-readiness, student and staff satisfaction, and strategic partnerships.
● Enhance the undergraduate educational experience to ensure a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and excellence.
● Represent and promote collegiate advising by fostering and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships both within the college and across campus.
● Partner with faculty and professional staff in our academic departments to move the college closer to its goal of a unified student services enterprise.
● Anticipate issues, research information needed to address concerns, and highlight opportunities to the Director of Advising and Student Support Services.
● Enforce performance targets and key success indicators through quantitative and qualitative analysis of workload, resource allocation, and student programming.
● Follow through on behalf of the Director of Advising to ensure projects are completed in timely manner.
● Contribute to budget planning process and resource allocation determinations.
● Engage in cross-functional project development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts.
● Help establish priorities for advisors and the unit and utilize data to make decisions about enhancing student services.
● Create a sense of belonging for students and staff.
Advising Office Leadership and Management 40%
● Provide leadership to and direct supervision of lead advisors and some collegiate or departmental academic advisors, and support staff in two or more advising offices.
● Manage daily operations and projects in those offices to optimize advisor availability and service to students.
● Ensure ongoing advisor growth and development.
● Implement policies and practices that support students and staff while ensuring alignment of those policies and practices.
● Ensure the consistent application of policies and procedures.
● Establish expectations for and model both exceptional student service and high quality work.
● Empower academic advisors to take ownership of assigned caseload of undergraduates through ongoing, proactive outreach to and monitoring of their students in an effort to establish stronger advising relationships.
● Leverage existing technologies to improve delivery of advising services.
● Participate in staff hiring, training, performance review, and promotion processes.
● Advise and counsel students, particularly those with unique needs and concerns, on regular basis, including maintaining a personal caseload of students.
● Coordinate probation review and degree clearance processes.

- Bachelor’s Degree with at least eight years of related experience.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in higher education and significant experience in working directly with undergraduates.
- Depth of knowledge in academic advising, student services, and student development.
- Previous supervisory or oversight responsibilities.

- Master's Degree, ABD, or Doctorate in liberal arts, higher education, student personnel, counseling, or other field directly related to the position.
- At least eight years of progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education, including supervisory experience.
- At least three years of direct academic advising experience.
- Understanding of developmental issues facing liberal arts students.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience that is collaborative, flexible, responsive, transparent, and accountable.
- Superior interpersonal skills and a proven ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.
- Proven ability to successfully manage substantial work load that includes multiple commitments, diverse constituencies, and competing priorities.
- Ability to articulate a vision for student service excellence and the value of a liberal arts education and how that applies to career-readiness.
- Significant appreciation for the liberal arts and education or work experience in the liberal arts.
- Knowledge of student services at the University of Minnesota and experience with related advising structures and technologies.
- Experience with program evaluation and assessment.
- Familiarity with data analytics and budget-driven decision-making.
- Breadth of experiences in higher education and familiarity with national trends and best practices.
