Position Description

The Dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences serves as the chief administrative officer for the College, reporting directly to the Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides vision and leadership for the College, overseeing academic program quality, research and scholarship, faculty development and achievement, department chair leadership, student learning and success, and administration of budgets, facilities, and resources. Additionally, the Dean is responsible for administration of off-campus programs, collective bargaining agreement implementation, policies and procedures, accreditations, external collaborations and partnerships, external grants and contracts, and development and fundraising for the College, in alignment with the division of Academic Affairs', University's, and System's strategic directions and goals.

Minnesota State University has approximately 15,000 students.The College of Social & Behavioral Sciences includes departments of Anthropology, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Gender & Women's Studies, Geography, Government, History, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology & Corrections, and Urban & Regional Studies. In addition, the college houses the Chesley Center for Aging, Center for Economic Education, the Kessel Lecture Series, the Kessel Peace Institute, and the Organizational Effectiveness Research Group, and the Archeology, Geography, and Earth Sciences [AGES] Laboratory. Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a discipline within the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. (Conferred on an official transcript at the time of application.)
  • Eight (8) years of a combination of increasing and successful higher education faculty and administrative experience, achieving the level of department chair, related experience, or higher.

  • Record of excellent and distinctive teaching, scholarship and/or creative activity, and professional leadership and service, within a discipline represented in the College.
  • Demonstrated commitment to leading and supporting academic program quality, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote faculty growth and professional development and achievement (across all established criteria).
  • Demonstrated ability to promote student learning, engagement, and success, both undergraduate and graduate.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships within the University, including faculty, department chairs, deans, staff, and other internal stakeholders across the divisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships and to develop public and private partnerships, with a variety of external stakeholders and constituencies, to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to leading and supporting academic program quality, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Ability to increase external funding, through grants, contracts, and/or gifts?.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and develop resources (e.g., teaching, learning, technology, finances, etc.), while balancing multiple and competing demands.--Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills.
