Position Description

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs sponsors a wide range of resources and services to support and enhance the academic achievement of all medical students. These resources and services are coordinated through the Office of Academic Achievement, with oversight provided by the Director of Academic Achievement.

Reporting to theDirector of the CHM Academy, the Director of Academic Achievement is responsible for implementing and managing the programs, services and policies to support the academic success of all medical students.  The Director of Academic Achievement also is responsible for the budget and resources of the unit as well as supervision ofall unit personnel. This position will require travel to Grand Rapids, MI.


  • Review assessments of individual students to determine student’s need for support andidentify appropriate resources as needed, as well as recommend further assessments or referrals as deemed necessary;

  • Provide skills Instruction for students in group and individual settings;

  • Supervise the recruitment and training of tutors and small group facilitators for programs to support medical students;

  • Manage and develop support resources responsive to the needs of students in the Shared Discovery Curriculum;

  • Develop and supervise learning plans for medical students who are experiencing academic challenges;

  • Coordinate with other units in Academic Affairs as needed to provide support for students related to USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 performance;

  • Participate in end-of-semester academic review meetings, and report on issues that impede student progress;

  • Provide overall management of the unit and unit resources and supervision of the unit personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master or other advanced degree in education, higher education, psychology, social work, or a related field; five years’ work experience in academic advising and university/college/academic administration; excellent communication, interpersonal and coordination skills; demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds; and, willingness to engage in sensitive and complex problem solving including flexibility in meeting the needs of the students and college.
