Position Description

The College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Academic Advising to manage and oversee advising operations and retention efforts within the College of Agriculture and to work with academic advisors and departmental undergraduate program coordinators. Essential Functions to include (but not limited to):


  • Directs and oversees academic advising efforts in the College of Agriculture including training, professional development, and assistance for college advisors.
  • Oversees day-to-day advising activities in the dean?s office and serves as the College point of contact for advising-related issues.
  • Ensures consistency and quality of advising across the college and adherence to and compliance with university advising policies and procedures.
  • Communicates information to academic advisors, student services coordinators, and department undergraduate program coordinators in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Directs freshman and transfer student orientation sessions, workshops, and programs.
  • Directs the annual review of all Agriculture curricula to ensure that all models used for advising are current and information is accurately reflected in DegreeWorks and other university software used in academic advising processes.
  • Serves as the academic advisor for students in the Agricultural Communications major.
  • Serves on university level committees as the College of Agriculture liaison in matters related to academic advising.
  • Coordinates and leads retention and academic support efforts for the college including directing retention campaigns, tracking student data, and implanting programs to improve retention and academic performance.

This position reports to the Associate Dean for Instruction in the College of Agriculture and provides input on the performance reviews of academic advisors in the College.

Required Qualifications

  • Entry into the applicant pool requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Agriculture, Education, Business, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field;
  • 5 years of experience in academic advising or counseling; and knowledge of academic advising principles and practices.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, supervise, direct, evaluate, work in a team, solve problems, evaluate options, and make timely decisions with regard for the student's best interest is also required.
  • The candidate selected for the position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States by the appointment date and continue working legally for the proposed term of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Desired qualifications include: a Master's degree from an accredited institution which may include a broad range of academic majors within Agriculture, Education, Humanities, Liberal Arts, or Business; experience in academic advising; demonstrated ability to work with students; knowledge of higher education issues; some experience in working with faculty and staff in higher education; and a strong record of working with a team of colleagues.
