Position Description

The Director of Academic Advising & Student Services will be responsible for creating and maintaining the Academic Advising and Student Services program for the Graduate Programs Office in the School of Business. This position will supervise one Graduate Academic Advisor and one Student Services Specialist. In addition, this position will provide high level academic and student services advising to students in the School of Business' five graduate programs.


May personally provide academic advice to students on academic progression and requirements.

(20%)•Directs Student Academic Advisors who are providing the full range of academic advising to department students and service to department chairs/deans and faculty.

(15%)•Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides full range of student services advice to management, faculty, and students.

(10%)•Responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.

(10%)•Provides guidance and assistance to the most complex and/or precedent-setting issues. (5%)•Monitors and evaluates employee performance.

(5%)•Provides training and development.

(5%)•Recommends employee selection and corrective action, if necessary.

(5%)•Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Student Services operations, and recommends to department management changes in policies and procedures.

(5%)•Maintains the department's student academic advising budget.

(5%)•Coordinates or oversees the coordination of TA and Reader appointments.

(5%)•Recommends changes to student services policies and procedures.

(5%)•In collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean and the Director of Graduate Admissions, oversees the distribution of financial aid for graduate programs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Minimum of 6 years of related experience.

Ability in persuasion and leadership.

Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.

Project management skills.

Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

Abilities in problem identification, reasoning.

Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Skills in social perceptiveness.

Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Counseling, Student Development, Education, or other related area.

Minimum of 2 years of experience advising MBA or graduate students.

Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
