Position Description

The Director of the Academic Resources Center oversees the tutor and M*A*S*H (Math and Science Help) programs, advises students academically, maintains international tutor and mentor certifications for the center, as well as oversees the Academic Advising Fellowship Program. Responsible for creating a vision and mission for the Academic Resources Center, developing and maintaining financial resources needed, and assessing educational outcomes.


  • Recruits, trains and supervises peer tutors and M*A*S*H leaders. Coordinates participation and student involvement in the New England Peer Tutor Association annual conference. Meets regularly with staff to provide session feedback, discuss professional goals, and enhance leadership skills. Develops and facilitates student staff retreats.

  • Creates and facilitates training modules for beginning, advanced, and master level tutor and mentor certification. Maintains documentation of training hours, tutoring hours, mentoring hours, and academic criteria necessary for certification. Collaborates with on campus resources to gather materials necessary for certification.

  • Coordinates campus wide programming related to Academic Resources Center, including workshops, events, and collaboration with offices and services on campus.

  • Creates online tutoring modules and maintains a library of electronic resources for students.

  • Engages faculty in the support and delivery of tutoring programs. Collaborates with the Morgan Teaching and Learning Center to provide professional development opportunities for staff and faculty pertaining to peer tutoring.

  • Collaborates with Executive Director of the Office of Academic Advising and Director of Academic Programming and Support to ensure strategic alignment in the delivery of services.

  • Oversees Academic Advising Fellowship program including recruiting, training, and supervising Academic Advising Fellow(s). Meets regularly to discuss performance feedback, create workshop content, foster campus wide collaborations, and develop academic coaching skills.

  • Assesses students stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental goals and tasks. Assists students in developing decision making skills relevant to educational options and possible outcomes. Provides individual counseling in developing effective learning strategies. Develops individual academic plans and monitors students academic progress

  • Supports academically at-risk students, including students who are not making satisfactory academic progress. Provides individual coaching sessions for students based on an evaluation of the students academic and personal background.

  • In support of WPIs faculty advising model, provides academic advising guidance to a caseload of sophomore, junior, and senior students.

  • Assesses needs and utilization of Academic Resources Center through electronic reporting and dashboard indicators.

  • Represents the Office of Academic Advising on various campus-wide committees.

  • Maintains memberships in appropriate professional organizations such as College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), New England Peer Tutor Association (NEPTA), and National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

  • Actively engages in professional development organizations including: serving on committees, hosting conferences, presenting at regional and national conferences, and publishing in relevant professional documents.

  • Maintains the day-to-day function of tutoring appointment software, including inputting of schedules, course roll-overs, center availability, and various reporting functions.

  • Develops and maintains Academic Resources Center budget.

Required Qualifications

  • Over three years experience required in learning center management, academic advising, or other higher educational role.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, presentation and evaluation of a full range of academic support services for students.
  • Knowledge of research and theoretical perspectives of factors affecting student learning, achievement and retention.
  • Knowledge of various learning styles and related teaching approaches.
  • A proven ability to direct training activities and conduct counseling sessions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Masters degree preferred.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and prioritize details for multiple programs and to develop academic skills with individual college students.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills.
  • Experience in effectively working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of student information systems (such as Banner) and FERPA Regulations for handling student records
