Position Description

Advise Bachelor of Science students in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) in all academic and career aspects of their program of study including degree and course planning, co-ops/internships, registration, transferring of credits, and degree requirements. Represent the ME-EM department to prospective students and parents through individual visits and outreach activities. Coordinate ME-EM related pre-college programs and first year orientation for the department.


  • Assist students with degree planning to include courses, minors, concentrations, co-ops/internships, study abroad and other broadening opportunities.

  • Check degree schedules for certification of graduation using the Degree Audit Report System (DARS).

  • Represent the ME-EM department by meeting with prospective students and parents.

  • Evaluate previous coursework with regard to degree requirements for the BSME and coordinate transfer credit evaluations with the department.

  • Manage registration conflicts (e.g. filled sections, waiting lists, prerequisite waivers).

  • Update flowcharts and other advising materials including ME-EM advising website and assist with the creation of departmental marketing and promotional materials for undergraduate students.

  • Conduct first year advising meetings.

  • Meet with students experiencing academic difficulty.

  • Participate in program assessment and provide support for accreditation of degree programs.

  • Participate in appropriate department and university level committees.

  • Advise international English as a Second Language and transfer students transitioning into the BSME program

  • Coordinate Summer Youth and other pre-college programming for the department.

  • Coordinate and participate in university and department events (e.g. First Year Orientation, Preview Day, Open Houses, advising meetings, ME Night).

  • Collaborate with Career Services and other campus services to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills, and time management.

  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.1

  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or engineering related field.
  • One year engineering experience.
  • Experience using personal computers and basic software packages including email, calendaring, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with various and diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and document information accurately.
  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information (e.g. FERPA).
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative to solve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related engineering field.
  • Experience using BANNER and DARS software.
  • Experience working with college and/or high school students.
