Position Description

The Pre-Health and Biology Career Advisor is a skilled mentor capable of providing sound guidance to all students interested in pursuing a health professions career and possesses a skill set necessary to assist biology majors in finding and obtaining career preparation opportunities. This position will report to both the Academic Advising Center and Hart Career Center with support provided by the Chair of the Biology Department.


  • In collaboration with Biology faculty advisors, provide individual and group academic advising and career counseling to Biology students and alumni by appointment and during assigned drop-in hours
  • In collaboration with faculty advisors, provide individual and group academic advising and career counseling to all pre-health career students and alumni by appointment and during assigned drop-in hours
  • Assist students with course planning specific to their health career professional school of choice
  • Coach students to develop short-and and long-term job seeking strategies/career plans
  • Provide support and options appropriate for students seeking a “gap year” experience
  • Advise and support students who change direction in terms of health professions vocation goals during their college career
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and all testing/admission requirements relevant to dentistry, pharmacy, physician’s assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, optometry, veterinary medicine, and other allied health fields
  • Guide students through all steps of the professional school application process (e.g., ADSAS, AMCAS, OptomCAS, CASPA) including the required application materials, entrance examinations (DAT, MCAT, OAT, GRE), professional resumes/cvs, personal statements, and interview preparation
  • Support the Director of Academic Advising as needed with duties related to new student orientation and transfer student orientation
  • Cultivate and develop internships, research opportunities, externships, etc. for non-Pre-med Biology majors
  • Work extensively with IWU alumni, faculty, Advancement Office and the Hart Career Center to coordinate a comprehensive volunteer, shadow and externship program for pre-health students at IWU
  • Identify site locations, employer visits, transportation, and on-site supervision of students
  • Support opportunities such as the Global Medical Brigades or LeRoy Cadaver Lab that focus on hands-on medical experiences, coordinate and refer students as appropriate--Support the Hart Career Center with on-going reporting of students involved in internships
  • Provide educational programming, workshops, and specialized networking events throughout the academic year appropriate for pre-health career students and students interested in biology careers, coordinate the Health Career Panel and Luncheon, support and assist with campus functions relevant to pre-health career development

Required Qualifications

  • Possesses a master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, college student personnel, or related science field or 10 years experience in a related field within higher education or healthcare industry
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal and written communication, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism
  • Experience developing, conducting and analyzing outcome assessment data--Computer proficiencies with database management, spreadsheets, and automated recruitment software
  • Experience working with students interested in pursuing pre-health professional programs and/or the field of Biology
  • Some travel throughout Central Illinois and the Chicagoland area is required
  • Some overnight and/or weekend duties may be required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to individuals with three to five years of prior academic advising and/or career services experience, as well as prior experience working with a diverse student population
