Success and the Student-Athlete Non-Credit Online Course
Summer 2012 Course
June 4 - July 30, 2012
Course
Description
This
non-credit course has been developed for use by academic advisors,
athletic counselors and other campus staff (both inside and
outside athletics) responsible for student-athlete academic
support and for eligibility certification.
The
goal of the course is to provide an avenue for staff members
who work campus-wide to receive training on the NCAA Division
I and Division II rules and regulations, as well as to gain
information on basic principles for advising students, with
an emphasis on advising student-athletes and improving academic
success.
Course
Format
By
offering this information in an online format, participants
are provided a learning opportunity that can be accessed either
in their own home or office, and at a time of day that works
best for their schedules. They
will not be required to be online at any particular time and
can work at their own pace. The class content will move forward
each week allowing the participant the entire week to work
through the weeks content. The participants can complete the
content all in one day or do a little each day as their schedule
allows.
The
course is eight weeks in length.
This
course is structured in a manner that allows the participants
to develop a national network through interaction with other
members of their cohort through virtual chat rooms and discussion
boards.
Technology
Requirements
You
will need a computer that can connect to the World Wide Web
with specific browser requirements (see next section below).

Course
Registration and Fee
The
cost for participants is $130 per person before May 28. After May 28, the fee is $155.
Registration will be available, online and download to mail /fax in, within the next few days.

Cancellation/Substitution
Policy
Written notice to NACADA is required.
On
or before May 28: Refund of registration fee, less
$25.
After
May 28: No refunds. At any time prior to the beginning
of the course, a participant may transfer a registration
to another individual from the same institution. The new
individual must complete and submit a registration form
indicating the substitution. At any time prior to the beginning
of the course, a participant may transfer a registration
to a future term the course is offered.

Course
Curriculum
Module
1: Foundation Principles for Academic Advising and Student-Athletes
Includes
the concept of academic advising, the role of athletics
at the the institution, understanding the student-athlete
and effective advising delivery models.
Module
2: NCAA Rules and Regulations
Includes
an overview of academic reform and the NCAA, initial eligibility
and progress toward degree standards and the academic performance
program.
Module
3: Principles of Student-Athlete Success
Information
on student-athlete development and learning theories, career
life planning, legal and ethical issues and individualized
advising (disabilities, at-risk, first generation, undecided,
etc.).
Module
4: Design and Implementation of Systems
Information
on supporting curricular choices, resources, training and
development, campus engagement and best practices including
initiating and implementing change.
Course
Facilitators
Facilitators
will be assigned to assist those taking the course by posing
questions for discussion, sharing successful practices and
answering questions.
Course
Assessment
Each
Module will include an assessment component including questions
covering material and participation in topical discussions.
Completion
of Course
Upon successful completion of all four Modules, the participant
will receive a certificate suitable for framing.
