Academic College Advisor

Position Description

Southern Utah University, located in Cedar City, Utah, is seeking applicants for the position of Academic College Advisor for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The desired start date is August 1, 2008. Salary is $30,000; excellent benefits. There are two general purposes for this position: (1) Advise and counsel freshmen and sophomore students. Assist in advisement and counseling of junior and senior students as required by departments in HSS. (2) Assist the academic dean and department chairs with the aspects affecting the student-body as required (i.e. curricula articulation, recruitment, admission, retention, tracking and assessment).

Duties

• Advise and counsel students by assisting them in forming graduation plans and course schedules in accordance with university advising policies and procedures.

• Keep abreast of current general education requirements.

• Provide input on class schedules.

• Evaluate all transfer credits into the College (with assistance from the chairs).

• Serve as the articulation representative for the College on statewide committees.

• Track student progress and determine eligibility for advancement to upper-division major course work.

• Work as part of the university advising team.

• Evaluate academic progress toward graduation; verify completion of courses for majors and optional minors. Contact person for graduation paperwork.

• Be responsible for maintaining files and a database of students and alumni.

• Assist the College in student recruitment activities, brochure publications, and home page information.

• Serve as liaison between other state programs and SUU programs.

• Update SUU catalog information annually.

• Assist the dean, department chairpersons and faculty in preparing presentations, booths at schools or conferences, etc, for recruitment purposes.

• Participate in advising and registration during University Orientation, Welcome Week and transfer school visits.

• Other duties as assigned by the dean and/or department chairpersons.

• Teach, as needed, one or two sections of UNIV 1000, Student Success Course.

• Create and maintain a web advising site.

• Assist with Commencement and Convocation exercises.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree is required, preferably in the fields of student personnel, counseling or higher education administration. (Applicants with minimum of 18 graduate credit hours with definite degree completion date may be considered.)

• Excellent human relations, oral and written communication skills required.

• Computer experience with student information system programs, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and/or other computer programs mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional work experience in academic advising at a college or university level strongly preferred.

• Experience with graduate programs, admission requirements and acceptance guidelines helpful.

Duties

• Responsible for the academic advisement of science majors and assisting them in forming graduation plans and course schedules in accordance with university advising policies and procedures.

• This position reports to the Dean of the College of Science and works in tandem with the other COS advisor.

• This position is responsible for establishing a seamless advising system which includes consistent upkeep and maintenance of student files and records and ongoing communication with the other COS advisor, department chairs and the college Dean.

The College of Science is made up of academic programs in agriculture, biology, chemistry, geology and nursing. These programs are housed in the departments of agriculture and nutrition science, biology, physical science, and nursing. The W. P. Carey School of Business seeks an Academic Success Specialist, for the Undergraduate Program. This individual will be a key contributor to increasing student retention and graduation by supporting current students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of in-person and online academic counseling and support strategies.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing 1:1 as well as group academic advising, recruitment and retention, and academic success support functions to              students to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of degree program,
- Utilizing online tools such as Degree Audit Reporting System and eAdvisor to monitor and assist students with timely academic   progress, exploration of various academic options, and course selection and registration,
- Participating in recruitment/admissions, retention, career development, and student engagement activities, including teaching a
  student success course,
- Working with students dealing with complex academic situations, making appropriate and timely referrals for non-academic          issues and/or concerns to applicable services including, but not limited to:

    Student Health, Counseling & Consultation and Career Services,
- Collaborating with academic units and student services departments throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student   support,
- Advising a variety of students, including current, prospective (high school and transfer), and transition (incoming or outgoing),
- Preparing reports and advising materials, and
- Developing and presenting workshops for students, parents, high school/community college advisors about W. P. Carey               programs, policy, and procedures.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE:

The Undergraduate Programs Office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., some evening and weekends are required.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Counseling or closely related field AND tow (2) years previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention, related student services, teaching in an institution of higher education; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Preferred Qualifications
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree preferred. Experience working in an academic environment; college-level advising; collaborating with students and
faculty and staff. Demonstrated knowledge of: student recruitment and admissions; retention programs; business education. Experience working with: Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook); Student Information Systems; effective verbal and written communication skills; good organization skills; attention to detail; problem solving; teamwork.

Position Description
The Assistant Director takes a lead role in the development and coordination of programs that enhance awareness of the many and varied aspects of Asian/Pacific American cultures. Another important role is that of supervising, advising, and working with individual students and student groups and providing appropriate support for them related to their specific concerns. The Assistant Director will also be involved in teaching, training, consulting and other activities that will assist others in enhancing their multicultural understanding. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of A/PASS and is part of the Office Management Team that includes the Director, Assistant Director and Administrative Assistant.

Duties
•Develop and support programs (such as the annual “Asian Fest”) that enhance cultural awareness on campus and surrounding community by working with students, other campus offices/departments, and resources within the community.
•Work closely with students that may have questions related to their transition to the university, academics, financial aid, career options, campus resources or a variety of other areas.
•Have working knowledge of A/PASS and campus resources, policies, and procedures.
•Co-teach A/PASS classes when offered and conduct presentations related to diversity.
•Assist with the hiring, training, and supervision of student staff
•Coordinate and provide on-going support for special projects performed by office student paraprofessionals.
•Provide support to student organizations affiliated with the office.
•Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students.
•Represent the office in the Director’s absence.
•Requires some weekends and nights.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years full-time professional experience in education, human services or other related areas. Master’s degree in student personnel or related field may be substituted for experience. Experience with student development at the college level, evidence of involvement in the Asian/Pacific American community (includes more than ESL tutoring or teaching, living abroad in Asia or majoring in Asian Studies).

Taos - Student Success Associate

Position Description
UNM- Taos invites applicants for the Taos Student Success Associate. The successful candidate will work with special student populations, will provide advisory and support services to students as appropriate; will develop and oversee a range of integrated and innovative special programs and initiatives designed to assist in the recruitment and retention of students within an underrepresented target population; and provide outreach to area schools. This position will report to UNM-Taos but may be housed at the Taos Pueblo, and will be expected to communicate regularly with their supervisor at UNM-Taos.

 

Duties
Provides academic, career, admissions, and/or other advisory and support services related to student academic success and retention, as assigned.
Assists in the development, preparation, and facilitation of educational seminars, workshops, and other activities designed to enhance student retention and academic success.
Prepares and conducts or assists in the preparation and conduct of faculty and staff training on strategies, policies, procedures, and issues pertaining to student retention and success.
Works with higher level associates and/or with academic faculty, client staff and community members in the resolution of day-to-day issues associated with the retention and educational success of students; refers unusually complex or sensitive issues to more senior associate staff, as appropriate.
Creates and maintains individual student files and other related materials as appropriate, in accordance with University policy and state and federal regulations and guidelines.
Administers examinations and/or other qualifying requirements or activities related to student placement, GED testing, tutoring, and course make-up exams, as directed.
Participates in the composition, development, and preparation of written materials related to student retention and success.
Participates as assigned in professional workshops, seminars, and associations on a local, state, or regional basis; may provide assistance in the preparation and delivery of conference presentations.
Provides input and assistance, as assigned, in the formulation of services, operations, and systems related to student retention and success.
May perform one or more collateral assignments of similar or lower level of responsibility for other operating units of the Branch, in accordance with institutional need and individual experience and interest, up to 20% of nominal working hours.
