Academic Advisor

Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Success, the purpose of this job is to provide academic advisement and educational planning for current students. The Advisor is responsible for assessing academic levels, attending to student academic inquires, assisting in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advising on academic program changes. Advises and assists students in the development of academic plans and class schedules, analyzes applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry and exit from the university. Develops and maintains appropriate files and records.

Performs related work as directed.

 

Duties

Provides assistance with educational planning and academic advisement. Answers student inquiries and resolves problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, referring to catalogs, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources.

 

Receives and reviews transcripts to ensure eligibility for admission to a programs including unofficial evaluation of transfer credit and applicability of academic credit to program requirements.

 

Initiates and maintains student files as appropriate, updating and evaluating file as new information is received.

 

Reviews student files to ensure deadlines are met for completing various graduation requirements such as coursework requirements, and other specific program requirements.

 

Prepares form letters, individual letters, and information materials in support of group And/or individual recruitment efforts, attends and participates in individual and group orientation and other information dissemination sessions.

 

Assists faculty advisors and/or other counseling personnel by providing records, evaluations, interpretations, and other requested data, recommendations, and conclusions.

 

Coordinates and implements academic liaison program with academic departments.

 

Conducts faculty academic advisement training sessions; maintains advisor manual.

 

Assists with new student orientation and other Student Affairs sponsored activities.

 

In conjunction with other departments, organizes, conducts and evaluates the Placement, Advisement, and Registration program.

 

Supervise junior level Academic advisor.

 

Hire, train, and supervise peer academic leaders (PALs) on academic advising and university policies and procedures.

 

Serve as a liaison between Academic Affairs and Student Success Center.

 

Performs supplemental administrative activities such as scheduling meetings and interviews, securing requested information, verifying and maintaining computerized data files, and preparing summary reports.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated understanding of the role of academic advisement and previous experience in Higher Education Academic Advising.

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of Student Success, counselor responsibilities include the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and services designed to promote student career development and the accomplishment of personal and academic goals.

Duties

•   Provide career counseling, educational planning, and academic advising to undergraduate students

•   Disseminate information on Career Services programs, employment and internship opportunities, and career development activities to students, faculty, staff, and employers

•   Conduct site visits with employers to establish internship and employment opportunities for undergraduate students

•   Plan, direct, and implement career fairs

•   Provide career resource workshops and perform resume critiques and mock interviews as needed

•   Develop/maintain working knowledge of career related software and coordinate the development and maintenance of a career database

•   Serve as liaison to academic departments in an effort to maintain current and accurate academic information

•   Work collaboratively with faculty to develop activities that enhance students’ knowledge of the “world of work”

•   Provide short term, solution-focused counseling services, crisis intervention, and emergency support

•   Initiate and maintain individual student files as appropriate

•   Assist in the daily operations of the Student Success Center

•   Assist in the implementation of Placement, Advisement, and Registration

•   Teach a career exploration course, if required

•   Serve as a Division of Student Affairs team member

•   Serve on University committees and other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

•   Master’s degree in student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology or related field.

•   Knowledge of student development theory and career development theory implementation and evaluation.

•   One to two years of related experience. Related experience includes positions in a college career center, college counseling center, or a closely related function.

•   Ability to effectively counsel/advise college students in academic areas.

•   Experience working with college students in addressing career development choices, personal problems, interpersonal relationships, family and social issues.
