The Academic
Advisor Liaison (AAL) centralizes and coordinates the college’s
efforts to support the success of academically at-risk traditional
age students. The AAL is a knowledgeable guide who provides students
with options, facilitates connections, and offers advice about
how to maximize the benefits of college support services. The
AAL provides personal support and guidance for those who have
been conditionally admitted, readmitted; those on academic probation,
in other academic trouble, or in need of additional academic support.
Working in conjunction with Admission, Campus Life (Counseling,
Residential Life, and Student Health), faculty advisors, the First
Year Center, the Learning Commons, and Multicultural Education,
the AAL serves as a link between faculty advisors and these student
support services. As a first stop for faculty who are concerned
about a student’s progress, the AAL provides individual, direct,
and practical academic guidance, but not course selection, for
selected students and organizes learning teams and other approaches
for student support when appropriate. In addition, the AAL supports
the Learning Strategies component of the student success initiative
by teaching a Learning Strategies course each semester.

The Director
of Advisement is primarily responsible for developing a comprehensive
advising program for all six Mount Olive locations. The person
in this position will ensure that the information and service
needs of students are addressed. In collaboration with other members
of the Student Success Center Staff, this position also has responsibility
for initiating and coordinating a network of programs and outreach
efforts to promote the academic success of traditional and non-traditional
students at MOC.
Duties
• Provide
general advising support for new and continuing students, via
face-to-face meetings, phone consultation, and request for general

• Assist
in planning academic programs and course sequencing consistent
with students' interests, competencies and aspirations
• Maintain
advising caseloads of students who have not yet declared a major;
guide students through the major exploration process
• Conduct
follow-up with students who have not pre-registered for the following
semester
• Consult
with advisors and faculty provide on-going training for development
and improvement of advising skills
• Serve
as a resource and liaison to faculty, deans, and Location Directors
working with students with special circumstances that require
assistance and/or referrals to other offices or services
• Assist
in developing a strategy to improve the retention of all residential
students and, in particular, conditionally-admitted and undeclared
students
• Coordinates
with academic departments, student life, career services, and
Teaching and Learning Center, and Student Development to develop
a system of academic support services and programs for students

for all majors

students to the importance of advising, giving instructions for
registration, explanation of general course requirements
• Manage
and up-date records; develop and updating forms for tracking student
progress,

and collate beginning and end-of-semester data concerning progress

special assistance in several areas of administration and computer

a minimum of one Freshman Seminar class each Fall Semester

Minimum
of one year experience in higher education within the area of
academic advising or teaching, or equivalent combination of education
and experience is preferred. Basic computer skills are needed
to access the University's record system, e-mail programs and

practices. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively interpersonally
and in writing. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds,
interests, and abilities. Good knowledge of computers, particularly
in regard to hardware and software systems used in student records.

skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with organizational
