Duties

The Coordinator of First Year Student Success has primary responsibility for coordinating all academic support programs for freshman; including Summer Advising and Registration events, First Year Experience, Freshman Summer Reading and Academic Skill development for freshmen in academic difficulty. Teaching responsibilities typically consist of First Year Experience courses and academic skills modules specifically targeted to freshmen.

Duties

The University College at UNCW seeks a professional academic advisor to be part of a team developing a pre-health professions advising program. This position will also have responsibility for coordinating advising for freshmen seeking to enter science majors.

Duties

University College advisors provide academic advising and support to an advising load of 150-175 students from the time of their admission until they enter their majors. This advisor will be expected to provide accurate, current curricular information to assist students in academic program planning and goal clarification, with a concentration on students seeking to enter the science majors or the health professions. The advisor will be expected to teach a freshman seminar class each fall semester.

Required Qualifications

Academic Advisor Liaison

The Academic Advisor Liaison (AAL) centralizes and coordinates the college’s efforts to support the success of academically at-risk traditional age students. The AAL is a knowledgeable guide who provides students with options, facilitates connections, and offers advice about how to maximize the benefits of college support services. The AAL provides personal support and guidance for those who have been conditionally admitted, readmitted; those on academic probation, in other academic trouble, or in need of additional academic support. Working in conjunction with Admission, Campus Life (Counseling, Residential Life, and Student Health), faculty advisors, the First Year Center, the Learning Commons, and Multicultural Education, the AAL serves as a link between faculty advisors and these student support services. As a first stop for faculty who are concerned about a student’s progress, the AAL provides individual, direct, and practical academic guidance, but not course selection, for selected students and organizes learning teams and other approaches for student support when appropriate. In addition, the AAL supports the Learning Strategies component of the student success initiative by teaching a Learning Strategies course each semester.

Duties

• Works with Admission and the First Year Center to prepare support services for selected incoming traditional students.

• Identifies additional students that would benefit from academic support services by administering a three-week survey of faculty teaching first year traditional students and traditional students on academic probation.

• Communicates regularly with hall directors about students with sporadic class attendance and poor academic work issues and formulates appropriate support strategies.

• At the beginning of semesters, reviews course schedules of selected student population in conjunction with faculty advisors.

• Assists in organizing and overseeing mentoring program for students on probation.

• Provides direction for students needing Learning Commons services such as peer or professional tutoring services.

• Establishes regular times to check in with selected students about their academic progress.

• Confers with classroom faculty and faculty advisors about selected student progress.

• During the fall and spring breaks, assists in writing mid-semester concern letters to students and, when appropriate, parents and participates in meetings to support students with problematic interim grades.

• After winter break, contacts returning traditional students on academic probation to review schedules and identify concerns that need to be discussed with faculty advisors.

• Provides guidance during summer break for selected traditional age students enrolled in summer school.

Position Description

The Director of Advisement is primarily responsible for developing a comprehensive advising program for all six Mount Olive locations. The person in this position will ensure that the information and service needs of students are addressed. In collaboration with other members of the Student Success Center Staff, this position also has responsibility for initiating and coordinating a network of programs and outreach efforts to promote the academic success of traditional and non-traditional students at MOC.

Duties

•   Provide general advising support for new and continuing students, via face-to-face meetings, phone consultation, and request for general information

•   Assist in planning academic programs and course sequencing consistent with students' interests, competencies and aspirations

•   Maintain advising caseloads of students who have not yet declared a major; guide students through the major exploration process

•   Conduct follow-up with students who have not pre-registered for the following semester

•   Consult with advisors and faculty provide on-going training for development and improvement of advising skills

•   Serve as a resource and liaison to faculty, deans, and Location Directors working with students with special circumstances that require assistance and/or referrals to other offices or services

•   Assist in developing a strategy to improve the retention of all residential students and, in particular, conditionally-admitted and undeclared students

•   Coordinates with academic departments, student life, career services, and Teaching and Learning Center, and Student Development to develop a system of academic support services and programs for students

•   Master Mount Olive College academic policies and procedures and requirements for all majors

•   Introduce students to the importance of advising, giving instructions for registration, explanation of general course requirements

•   Manage and up-date records; develop and updating forms for tracking student progress,

•   Collect and collate beginning and end-of-semester data concerning progress of students.

•   Coordinate with university offices to maintain and use advising tools; provide special assistance in several areas of administration and computer technology, including IQ Web

•   Teach a minimum of one Freshman Seminar class each Fall Semester

•   Assist with pre-registration, Advising Days, and Welcome Week activities, as needed

•   Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree required.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of one year experience in higher education within the area of academic advising or teaching, or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Basic computer skills are needed to access the University's record system, e-mail programs and to engage in correspondence. Understanding of developmental advising practices. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively interpersonally and in writing. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities. Good knowledge of computers, particularly in regard to hardware and software systems used in student records. Demonstrated skills in group dynamics, leadership and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with organizational change; ability to meet deadlines, and work as part of an administrative team.

Position Description

The Academic Advising Programs in the College of Arts and Sciences and General College is seeking applications from outstanding educational professionals who have an interest in assisting undergraduates with their academic planning and the development of their educational plans.

Academic Advisors provide advising to all first year students and sophomores in the General College and continue to work with juniors and seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences (Fine Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics).

Duties

Primary Duties:

•Assist students in defining their educational goals and objectives •Help students understand the process for selecting appropriate courses to satisfy university and major/minor requirements •Explain academic policies, procedures, rules and regulations •Work collaboratively with academic departments and professional schools to provide a holistic and consistent advising experience •Help students identify challenges that may impede their academic progress, and propose alternatives for improving academic performance •Make referrals to appropriate university support services and/or academic departments •Discuss academic eligibility and restoration of eligibility for continuing and readmitted students •Approve requests for special registrations, e.g., Carolina Courses Online, etc.

•Represent department at various recruiting, orientation, scholarship, and student sponsored functions •Document advising sessions with students and with others on behalf of students •Serve on appropriate department and University committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant or Associate Dean.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. The candidate must have at least one year professional experience working in a college/university environment; excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of advising, teaching or administrative experience at a four year college/university.

Knowledge of SEC and University of Tennessee rules and regulations preferred. Work experience with diverse populations desired.
