The Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning is searching for an Academic Advisor who has an interest in the design professions and in helping students complete their curriculum path. The Academic Advisor works closely with departmental faculty and students while coordinating with college and graduate school staff.

 

Job responsibilities include:

•  organizes, maintains and prepares reports on student grades, enrollment, course fulfillment and related tasks using CAPD database, iSIS , DARS and MS Office suite;

•  maintains close coordination with faculty to be aware of student issues and progress;

•  prepares written communications to students and offices;

•  maintains course schedule and electronic catalog using appropriate software;

•  communicates, coordinates and facilitates admissions process for department with undergraduates (Non-Baccalaureate) and graduate (Post-Baccalaureate) students;

•  serves as liaison for department to CAPD Office, KSU Graduate School and other departments of the CAPD;

•  participates in orientations, information and policy / decision-making meetings regarding admission and enrollment of students with respect to study abroad, internship and international students;

•  prepares student handbooks and other material to disseminate current information to students and faculty; and

•  participates in departmental faculty course and curriculum meetings / activities.

 

Required qualifications include:

•  bachelor’s degree in Student Services or related field;

•  one year experience in advising at the baccalaureate level selecting, scheduling and enrolling in courses that fulfill appropriate curricular requirements, counseling and monitoring students concerning academic progress;

•  experience in supervising academic records and files;

•  progressively responsible experience using MS Office suite (Access, Excel and Word);

•  experience in determining statistical needs and compile / analyze same;

•  well developed and tactful oral and written communication skills;

•  organizational and planning skills with ability to multi-task;

•  ability to maintain confidentiality; and

•  proven quality inter-personal skills.

 

Preferred qualifications include:

•  familiarity with iSIS and DARS student record systems;

•  affinity and / or experience with the design professions;

•  understanding as to how department offices function and impact advising; and

•  experience with this level of coordination and understanding of varied curricula requirements.

 

Starting salary: Negotiable depending upon experience and qualifications. Full-time, unclassified, 12 month appointment; K-State benefit eligible.

Position Description

Southwestern College Professional Studies, committed to quality online and onground education for adult learners, is seeking a proven leader as Director of Academic Advising and Learner Engagement in Wichita, KS. This newly-created position is in response to continued growth. The director will provide leadership for learner success including engagement and enhancement of key services and support networks given the progressively-oriented Professional Studies ethos of continuous improvement. The director is actively involved in the day-to-day operations of Professional Studies and as such must have a solid understanding and proven experience with:

a. learner success coaching within an accelerated 6-week format,

b. proactive academic advising focused on adult learners completing certificates, bachelors or masters degrees,

c. enrollment management strategies targeted for both on ground and online learners,

d. retention plans and measures of success.

Duties

Specifically the Director will work in four key areas:

Success Coaching and Retention

- Establish, implement and execute a comprehensive retention plan working collaboratively with advisors and other directors to        positively impact on learner retention immediately and over time.

- Develop a series of proactive strategies for engagement of learners with measurable outcomes–similar to the success                    coaching model used by other academic institutions.

Academic Advising

- Oversee all academic advising activities (including military and civilian learners– undergraduate and graduate learners–        onground and online learners); supervising staff at multiple locations.

Enrollment Management

- Facilitate the enhancement of systematic and system-wide learner communications and learner ‘flow’ processes including            ratios for growth.

Operational

- Manage and oversee military initiatives relating to advising, learner success and retention (GoArmyEd, eArmyU, AU ABC,             Guard portal).

- Serve as a primary liaison to various campus units (e.g., Registrar’s Office, Bookstore, Library).

- Assist in the full utilization of system tools in the college’s relational database.

- Ability to lead change or to seek new challenges with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Required Qualifications

A master's degree is required. Experience working with adult learners in an accelerated format is beneficial.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with the military or military learners is preferred.

Duties
