Admission Counselor & Enrollment Advisor for Professional Studies

Position Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Enrollment Services, the Admission Counselor & Enrollment Advisor for Professional Studies will be responsible for providing information regarding the University to Professional Studies (evening-adult) students and prospective students; oversee advising process for current students, review applications, follow up with students, select qualified applicants, and make recommendations regarding Professional Studies Program admissions to the Executive Director as appropriate.

Duties

• Read and evaluate applications; assure applicant credentials meet qualifications for admission; select qualified applicants and make recommendations regarding admissions to the Executive Director.

• Meet with prospective students individually; respond to questions or concerns of students; follow up with students as needed.

• Make, receive and respond to various telephone calls; respond to inquiries regarding registration, financial aid, admissions process and related matters.

• Coordinate and conduct campus visits.

• Liaise with the Assistant Director of Admission for Graduate & Professional Studies, Director of Financial Aid, and Registrar to ensure effective communication and efficiency in procedures.

• Provide academic advising for PSP undergraduate students, schedule changes, adding courses, leave of absences and withdrawals, and tutoring.

• Process student withdrawals for non-attendance.

• Assist with orientation, including preparing paperwork and forms for students and conducting orientations.

• Review weekly attendance and counsel students not attending class.

• Operate a computer, copier, fax and other office equipment as assigned.

• Prepare and maintain records and reports related to assigned activities.

• Participate in the development of publicity materials including letters, brochures and fliers.

• Train and provide work direction to assigned student staff.

Required Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s Degree and some experience in an admissions office or in a university/college setting.

Student Advisor

Position Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Experience, the Student Advisor is responsible for academic and career advising for students. The Student Advisor assists learners in making informed decisions about their educational and career goals and advises them about program requirements, course selection and related professional information and opportunities. Working in collaboration with other members of the Student Experience team and the Academic Division, the Student Advisor is responsible for student communications and monitors academic student progress and performance, inclusive of attrition and retention analysis. The Student Advisor administers the Mobility/Exchange Program, and collaborates on the administration and development of the Artstream program.

Required Qualifications

An undergraduate degree, Master’s degree preferred, in a related discipline, at least two years experience working with students and an understanding of student development theory with experience in student development programming is required. Post-secondary experience and a background in art and design are highly desirable.

ABOUT THIS POSITION: The UI Career & Professional Planning office is seeking an energetic and highly organized individual to join our team of career service professionals. Reporting to the Director of the Career and Professional Planning (CAPP) office, the Manager for Career Advising and Professional Development is responsible for all programs and services related to career advising and professional development, including the advising of students and alumni on career decision-making, job/internship searches, and other career development topics; coordinating and presenting class presentations and workshops related to career choice and professional development; creating and teaching for-credit career development courses; collaborating with faculty and student service departments to increase career presentations to targeted student populations; coordinating the alumni mentor program; coordinating and administering career assessments in cooperation with the Counseling Center; developing an assessment process to collect and analyze data for the purpose of program improvement; and overseeing the Teacher Placement File service. Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

· Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Human Resources, Counseling, Business Education, Adult Education, Psychology, or related field.

· 2-5 years experience in career services, student leadership development, human resource development, recruitment, counseling/advising, training, or other applicable field

· Excellent written communication skills

· Experience teaching adult learners and making formal and informal presentations

· Experience advising students in individual and/or group settings

· Experience with curriculum development and training

· Strong organization and project management skills

· Experience developing a process for assessment, collecting/analyzing data, and preparing reports and recommendations

· Strong computer skills

· Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

· Ability to professionally represent the CAPP office

Preferred Qualifications

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

· Master’s Degree in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Adult Education, Business Education, Human Resources, or related field

· Professional experience in career counseling, advising/mentoring, student development, or career education

· Experience administering and interpreting career assessments (i.e. DISCOVER, MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory)

· Experience managing, training, and supervising/mentoring staff and/or student workers

· Past participation in experiential learning activities such as internships, co-ops, service projects, study abroad, national exchanges or student leadership and activities

Position Description

The Director of Academic Advising and Support Services provides administrative leadership, supervision, and budgetary management/oversight for a number of integrated student support programs including Academic Advising, the Success at Southern/TRIO Student Support Services program, math placement and tutoring services, and the Writing Center. The Director serves on the Student Affairs Council, the Enrollment Services Leadership Team, the Enrollment Planning Council, and other university committees as requested. The Director is responsible for coordinating the development of a University Learning Center that will support student academic success and university retention and graduation goals. Functions of the Learning Center will be developed and phased in over the next 3-5 years.

Duties

Provides vision, leadership and direction to Academic Advising and academic support operations, working with faculty and staff to implement effective programs, policies and procedures to increase student success, retention and graduation rates. Evaluates the effectiveness of programs in achieving these outcomes. Ensures the development, implementation and evaluation of programs for students with academic need, students admitted with provisional status, students on academic probation, etc. Provides leadership and management to all aspects of SOU academic advising services, including development of summer registration programs for new students. Plans and coordinates the development of a University Learning Center that will support student academic success and university retention and graduation goals. Coordinates advising for under-prepared and probationary students, in conjunction with and support of SOU's larger early-intervention efforts. Coordinates and promotes student skills workshops designed to assist students in improving their study skills and academic performance. Coordinates the provision of academic advising training for faculty, with particular emphasis on general education requirements.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Communications, Psychology, Student Personnel, or related field and a minimum of five years of administrative experience managing academic advising, student success and/or student support programs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience working with students, faculty and staff from diverse social and economic backgrounds. Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity within the educational environment. Demonstrated strong organizational, supervisory and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of student development, developmental academic advising, and best practices in student success and retention.
