International Student Advisor

Position Description

The International Student Advisor is responsible for providing all aspects of advising to international students. This position reports to the International Student Advising Coordinator.

Duties

* Provide individual and group advising to international students in areas including: cultural, academic, transfer, immigration, employment, health, and personal advising

* Provide one-on-one, personalized advising as lead advisor for designated regional areas

* Provide orientation sessions for international students

* Develop and implement retention strategies in collaboration with the advising team and other International Programs staff

* Execute other related responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree

* Experience living abroad or studying abroad

* Demonstrated experience working with people of diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds

* Experience in academic and transfer advising

* Ability to work with computers and programs, such as MS Office applications and student database

* Experience working in an educational setting

* Must meet the Department of Homeland Securities' requirements for a Designated School Official

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree

* Fluency in language other than English

* Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO)

* Experience working in a community college

Institutional Information

The International Programs office at Green River Community College serves approximately 1000 international students from more than 40 different countries. The majority of students are enrolled in academic classes, with the intent to transfer and pursue a four-year degree. About 300 students are served in our Intensive English as a Second Language Program. Students usually live with host families, in shared housing, in apartments near the school, or in Campus Corner Apartments (Green River's on-campus student housing facility). The international student advising team uses a student-centered model of advising, with an emphasis on retention, support, and relationship building. Each advisor is responsible for a specific region of the world, and provides comprehensive advising and support services to students from their respective region. This may include transfer advising, academic course registration, orientation, and advising on other issues such as immigration, employment, and insurance. Advisors establish an individual education plan with their students, and monitor the student's progress each quarter. The advising team also works closely with staff in the marketing and service areas of International Programs.

Additional Information

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a temporary, exempt position expected to last through July 2010 with a prorated annual salary range of $40,000 - 46,000 DOE. Position will be eligible for vacation and sick leave accrual during the duration of employment. Occasional work occurs during the evenings and on weekends.

Assistant Director (8127)

Student Success Centre (Writing and Learning Support)

Position Description:

University of Calgary ~ A great place to work and learn. The University of Calgary currently invites applications for a Regular Full-time, Assistant Director - Student Success Centre (Writing and Learning Support). This position reports to the Director, Student Development. The Assistant Director, Student Success Centre, specializing in Writing and Learning Support Services, provides strategic and operational direction and management of writing support at the University of Calgary. Utilizing a sound knowledge of composition and learning theory, the incumbent will lead a team of ten professional non-credit instructional staff, tutors, administrative staff and student staff in implementing supplemental academic writing and learning support services, non-credit-bearing academic writing courses and workshops, and writing assessments, tailored to the needs of the student population. Writing Support Services will become a key component of the Student Success Centre to be housed in the new Taylor Family Digital Library in fall 2010. This senior position is accountable for the management and expenditure of a base operating budget of approximately $100,000. Strong judgment is required for discretionary decision making regarding services provided, daily operations, and to establish University wide policies and internal processes that impact directly on staff and service delivery to students. Strong skills in leadership, evaluating and managing staff performance, employee and labour relations, and developing and managing staff at all levels is required.

Duties:

  • Working closely with the Director, Student Development the incumbent is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing coordination of all aspects of writing support and learning support services at the University of Calgary
  • Consult with key stakeholders in Student and Enrolment Services (SES) units and other University departments, in developing writing and learning support services
  • Establish a strong vision and plan for writing and learning support services and oversees the operations and staffing of WSS inclusive of budget responsibilities, policy development, human resources, and space management
  • Plays a key role in establishing or altering policy, and represents Writing Support Services in interactions and committees across the University and in the community
  • Responsible for developing and providing supplementary writing support programs that correspond with best practices research and reflect a strong understanding of composition
  • Stay abreast of current research relating to best practices in learning theory and implement cutting-edge program developments to the benefit of our students (graduate and undergraduate, domestic and international, full-time and part-time, inclusive)
  • Establishes and maintains close working relationships with other learning service providers on campus, University departments, and external professional networks, and designs opportunities to provide learning support services centrally
  • Develops resource plans (staff, space, budget, equipment, etc.) and allocates resources to meet the objectives and evolving needs of students and the University
  • Selects, trains, manages, supports, and evaluates staff; provides feedback, development opportunities, training and compensation; coaches the performance of individuals for continuous improvement and is able to stimulate and support creativity and innovation in others

Required Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in a related field is required, preferably with specialization in composition
  • 2 or more years of leadership experience in a university writing centre is required. This experience will include supervision of staff including non-credit instructors, administrative staff and paraprofessional staff, design and oversight of service delivery, policy development, data collection and analysis and communications coordination
  • The incumbent must be a dynamic leader who possesses a strong student service orientation and is capable of managing significant organizational change while ensuring high quality service to students
  • Extensive experience tutoring academic writing to culturally and linguistically diverse populations of students in a university setting, such as a learning center, is required
  • Significant experience in managing budgets and aligning resources to achieve targets
  • Experience with budget management, working within a University budget model and the ability to effectively manage financial and human resources is an essential function of this position
  • Experience building successful partnerships with key learning service coordinators is required
  • Must have strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple demands and meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with English language assessment tools (such as MELAB and TOEFL) and experience working with the ESL population is an asset
  • Experience in grant writing is an asset.

Director of the Learning Center

Position Description:

Willamette University announces a full-time position for Director of the Learning Center. The Director is primarily responsible for managing the operations of the Learning Center and is responsible for planning and administering innovative academic support for undergraduate students. Additional responsibilities include assisting with academic advising and summer registration. This position requires specific knowledge of program, department, and University functions.

Work of the Director of the Learning Center involves a variety of duties and responsibilities in directing the Learning Center. Requires a high degree of communication skills to work effectively with students, faculty members, and staff. Performance of responsibilities has a distinct impact upon the success of academic support provided to students in the college. Requires a high degree of interpersonal contact with students and other internal affiliates as well as high degree of interaction with persons outside the university. Supervision is limited to work-study students and an administrative assistant.

The position of Director of the Learning Center is an 11-month administrative appointment. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and offers an attractive benefits package.

Duties:

The duties and responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of significance:

1.   Creates and executes programming for students related to college learning; subjects include test-taking, study skills, presentations, and skills required for success in a college environment.

2.   Provides oversight and coordination of academic support provided to students in the CLA, including tracking and support of students on academic probation or otherwise at risk of dismissal.

3.   Works closely with faculty members, CLA Dean's Office, Director of the Writing Center, Director of Disability and Learning Services, Director of Counseling Services, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Athletic Department, and the Office of Residence Life to provide support for students during each academic term; consults regularly with individual students.

4.   Recruits, trains, and supervises the work-study student employees who serve as Center consultants, peer mentors, and tutors.

5.   Manages and assesses the college peer tutoring program and related communication.

6.   Chairs the Student Support Committee and coordinates the efforts of its members in providing support services to students; manages the Academic Alert system.

7.   Collaborates with other college personnel in retention efforts; gathers data and reports as requested on retention issues.

8.   Provides support and preparation materials for graduate school entry examinations (e.g., CGEST, NTE, MSAT, MCAT, GRE, etc.).

9.   Manages the Learning Center budget; accounts for and reports on budgetary issues upon request.

10.  Supervises an administrative assistant, shared with the Writing Center, Language Learning Center, QUAD Center, and Student Academic Grants and Awards.

11.  Maintains printed and electronic resources, including the teaching resources website, related to college learning theory and best practices.

12.  Coordinates with Director of the Willamette Academy to prepare Academy students for their transition to college.

13.  Supports campus dialog regarding effective teaching.

Required Qualifications:

1.   Any combination of education, training or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential functions. Master's degree in learning-related academic field is required.

2.   Minimum of three years experience in student support administration.

3.   Comprehensive knowledge of student learning, retention, and achievement.

4.   Ability to supervise, train, and develop a wide variety of part-time, and student employees

5.   Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population.

6.   Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people in a manner that positively portrays the University and its programs, personnel, and philosophies.

7.   Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing, proficiency in a second language is preferred.

8.   Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.

Director, Academic Advising

The Academic Advising Director reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and oversees institutional support for academic advising programs, a critical component of university recruitment and retention efforts; gathers and disseminates information on best and emerging practices for effective advising; coordinates assessment for continuous improvement of advising; facilitates and provides technical assistance for departments and programs seeking to improve advising; serves as a liaison with other university offices (e.g., New Student Services, Career and Professional Planning, Tutoring and Academic Assistance Programs, Core Curriculum, colleges, Registrar's Office); and facilitates, in conjunction with other offices and professional groups (e.g., UI ACADA), ongoing professional development opportunities for staff and faculty.

Provide leadership in promoting effective practices in advising by: 45% Essential

Keeping abreast of emerging and best practices in advising undergraduate first-year and transfer students through professional reading and participation in regional and national professional conferences; providing leadership, coordination and facilitation of ongoing professional development for staff, faculty and administrators in partnership with UI ACADA, including the annual Symposium and university offices such as the Registrar's Office; providing up-to-date information for staff and faculty advisors through web and paper documentation; and interfacing with offices such as the Registrar's Office to provide consistent, accurate, and thorough information for students, staff, and faculty through the advising process.

Oversee program assessment and continuous improvement of advising by: 25% Essential

Designing, implementing, and integrating a system of advising assessment that leads to continuous improvement of advising at the program, department, and college levels; providing technical assistance to staff and faculty, programs, departments, and/or colleges seeking to improve advising; serving as a resource for staff and faculty seeking to improve their advising of students; and surveying staff and faculty advisors periodically to seek input on their suggestions for improving advising services.

Implement advising action plan by: 15% Essential

Reviewing, refining, and leading the implementation of the advising strategic action plan; sharing the action plan in the university community; operationalizing the action items for implementation; continuously monitoring the effectiveness of the plan and refining as needed; defining and measuring success criteria; and reviewing and renewing the action plan periodically.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
